Organizations Filed Purposes: As America's oldest professional ballet company and one of the three largest ballet companies in the United States, San Francisco Ballet Association (the Association) has enjoyed a long and rich tradition of artistic "firsts" since its founding in 1933. The mission of the Ballet is to share the joy of dance with its community and around the globe and to provide the highest caliber of dance training in its School. The Ballet seeks to enhance its position as one of the world's finest dance companies through its vitality, innovation, and diversity and through its uncompromising commitment to artistic excellence based in the classical ballet tradition. Guided in its early years by American dance pioneers the brothers Lew, Willam, and Harold Christensen, San Francisco Ballet currently presents more than 100 performances annually, both locally and internationally.

The Association operates the San Francisco Ballet School and a student residence. The Ballet School curriculum is designed and taught by an eminent faculty. It emphasizes a strong classical technique and a flow of movement that suggests a sense of energy, freedom, and joy - reflecting the kind of dancing favored by the Ballet. Girls and boys aged 8 to 18 follow a structured sequence of training stages designed to increase their technical skills, stamina, and discipline in accordance with their age and physical development. The program includes classes in technique, pointe work, pas de deux, men's technique, conditioning, contemporary and character dance and music. Seminars on nutrition and related issues are offered throughout the school year. The Ballet School provides a limited number of tuition and housing scholarships to intermediate and advanced level students based on their financial need or potential to achieve a professional career in ballet. Approximately fifty percent of the dancers in the Ballet received all or part of their training at the Ballet School. Students have also gone on to dance with such companies as English National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet; Royal New Zealand Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Vienna Opera Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, Alberta Ballet, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Houston Ballet,

The Center for Dance Education "CDE", a department of the Ballet, was formed in 2001 to coordinate the Ballet's community outreach and education programs. The CDE operates programs in schools and the community at large, sometimes in coordination with other community-based organizations. The Dance in Schools and Communities (DISC) is the largest of CDE's offerings and provides free interactive movement education to approximately 3,500 students in 36 San Francisco Unified School District Elementary Schools each year. Additional programs include after-school programs, a summer dance camp, scholarship programs, adult education, and community matinees. An estimated 25,000 community members are engaged by the department annually.
