Organizations Filed Purposes: SAN FRANCISCO OPERA'S MISSION IS 1) TO PRESENT OPERA PERFORMANCES OF THE HIGHEST INTERNATIONAL QUALITY AVAILABLE TO THE WIDEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCES; 2) TO PERPETUATE AND ENRICH THE OPERATIC ART FORM; 3) TO BE CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE IN ALL ASPECTS OF OPERA; AND 4) TO TAKE A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN TRAINING, ARTS EDUCATION, AND AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT. THE WORLD-RENOWNED SAN FRANCISCO OPERA IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT OPERATIC ORGANIZATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES. GREAT SINGING, OUTSTANDING CONDUCTING AND PRODUCTIONS SENSITIVE TO THE MUSIC ARE CORE VALUES OF THE OPERA. THE OPERA PERPETUATES ITS LEGACY THROUGH THE TRAINING OF YOUNG ARTISTS, ARTS EDUCATION, AND AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT.

PRODUCTION AND ARTISTIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS - SAN FRANCISCO OPERA'S 96TH SEASON FEATURED 53 MAINSTAGE PERFORMANCES OF EIGHT PRODUCTIONS THAT WERE ALL NEW TO THE WAR MEMORIAL OPERA HOUSE STAGE, A ROSTER OF INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTISTS, AND NUMEROUS CONCERTS, RECITALS, WORKSHOPS, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS ATTRACTING MORE THAN 201,000 INDIVIDUALS.HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COMPANY'S 2018-19 SEASON INCLUDED A NEW SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRODUCTION OF PUCCINI'S TOSCA BY DIRECTOR SHAWNA LUCEY AND PRODUCTION DESIGNER ROBERT INNES HOPKINS STARRING ITALIAN SOPRANO CARMEN GIANNATTASIO IN HER COMPANY DEBUT AS TOSCA; WELL RECEIVED MAINSTAGE CONCERTS; AND THE WEST COAST PREMIERE OF JAKE HEGGIE'S IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE STAGED DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. THE SEASON OPENED WITH JOSE CURA'S PRODUCTION OF THE DOUBLE BILL OF MASCAGNI'S CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA AND LEONCAVALLO'S PAGLIACCI SET IN BUENOS AIRES' LA BOCA DISTRICT. DONIZETTI'S LYRIC DRAMA OF TUDOR-ERA ENGLAND, ROBERTO DEVEREUX, WAS PRESENTED IN STEPHEN LAWLESS' PRODUCTION STARRING SONDRA RADVANOVSKY IN A TOUR-DE-FORCE PORTRAYAL OF ELISABETTA (ELIZABETH I, QUEEN OF ENGLAND). STRAUSS' ARABELLA RETURNED TO THE REPERTORY LED BY GERMAN CONDUCTOR MARC ALBRECHT IN HIS PREMIERE AMERICAN OPERA ENGAGEMENT STARRING ELLIE DEHN, BRIAN MULLIGAN, AND HEIDI STOBER. THE 2019 SUMMER PRESENTATIONS WERE DIRECTOR FRANCESCA ZAMBELLO'S NEW-TO-SAN FRANCISCO-OPERA PRODUCTION OF BIZET'S CARMEN STARRING J'NAI BRIDGES AND MATTHEW POLENZANI CONDUCTED BY JAMES GAFFIGAN; HANDEL'S PSYCHOLOGICALLY COMPLEX DRAMA ORLANDO UPDATED TO WORLD WAR II BY DIRECTOR HARRY FEHR STARRING SASHA COOKE IN THE TITLE ROLE; AND A WIDELY-ACCLAIMED PRESENTATION OF DVORAK'S RUSALKA CONDUCTED BY CURRENT CAROLINE H. HUME MUSIC DIRECTOR DESIGNATE, EUN SUN KIM, IN HER COMPANY DEBUT STARRING RACHEL WILLIS-SORENSEN, BRANDON JOVANOVICH, KRISTINN SIGMUNDSSON AND JAMIE BARTON IN DAVID MCVICAR'S PRODUCTION. ADDITIONALLY, THE SAN FRANCISCO OPERA CHORUS WAS FEATURED IN CONCERT AT THE DIANE B. WILSEY CENTER FOR OPERA; THE ANNUAL SCHWABACHER RECITAL SERIES, IN COLLABORATION WITH MEROLA OPERA COMPANY AND THE SAN FRANCISCO OPERA CENTER, PROVIDED FOUR SHOWCASES FOR YOUNG ARTISTS AND THE RESIDENT ADLER FELLOWS; AND, IN APRIL, THE COMPANY JOINED WITH THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO, FRENCH CONSULATE AND GRACE CATHEDRAL FOR A PUBLIC SOLIDARITY CONCERT FOR NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS. THROUGHOUT THE 2018-19 SEASON, NUMEROUS EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES, WORKSHOPS/TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS AND ADULTS, AND OPERA OUTREACH EVENTS WERE HELD REACHING THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS.

ELECTRONIC MEDIA - THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS INITIATIVE IS TO EXTEND THE COMPANY'S AUDIENCE THROUGH TELEVISION AND RADIO BROADCASTS, HOME VIDEO PRODUCTS, LOCAL SIMULCASTS, CINEMA PRESENTATIONS, WEB VIDEOS, AND IN-HOUSE HD COVERAGE. THE COMPANY'S PIONEERING OPERAVISION AND LOBBYVISION, OFFERED AT SELECT PERFORMANCES, GIVES BALCONY AUDIENCES A BETTER VIEW OF THE STAGE WITH SCREENS SHOWING REAL-TIME HD VIDEO AND SUBTITLES.

OPERA CENTER (TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT) - THE OPERA SUPPORTS AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, THE ADLER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. THE ADLER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IS A PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED RESIDENCY OF TWO YEARS OFFERING ADVANCED YOUNG ARTISTS INTENSIVE INDIVIDUAL TRAINING, COACHING, PROFESSIONAL SEMINARS, AND A WIDE RANGE OF PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES. ADLER FELLOWS GAIN VALUABLE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE BY PERFORMING ROLES OF INCREASING IMPORTANCE IN THE OPERA'S MAIN-STAGE SEASON. IN ADDITION TO PERFORMANCES ON THE MAIN STAGE, SELECTED ADLER FELLOWS ARE FEATURED IN THE SCHWABACHER RECITAL SERIES. THE ADLER SEASON CULMINATES IN AN ADLER FELLOWS CONCERT. ALUMNI FROM THE ADLER PROGRAM INCLUDE: SOPRANOS LEAH CROCETTO, NANCY GUSTAFSON, PATRICIA RACETTE, NADINE SIERRA, RUTH ANN SWENSON, ELZA VAN DEN HEEVER, AND DEBORAH VOIGT; MEZZO-SOPRANOS ZHENG CAO AND DOLORA ZAJICK; TENORS BRIAN JAGDE, SEAN PANIKKAR, AND NOAH STEWART; COUNTERTENOR BRIAN ASAWA; BARITONES MARK DELAVAN AND LUCAS MEACHEM; AND BASS-BARITONES MONTE PEDERSON AND JOHN RELYEA.
