Organizations Filed Purposes: TO SUPPORT THE ACADEMIC PLATFORM OF MEDSTAR HEALTH BY CONDUCTING HIGH QUALITY TRANSLOCATIONAL & HEALTH SVCS RESEARCH IN ALL FIELDS OF MEDICINE.

The MedStar Health Research Institute's highly qualified scientists and investigators conduct cutting edge clinical research. The research covers many areas and types of research across the following comprehensive research networks: cardiovascular, health services, cancer, medical and surgical services, orthopedics and sports medicine, neurosciences, rehab and core services. As one of the largest healthcare systems in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region, MedStar Health and its affiliated entities cared for one in four COVID-19 patients in the region since March 2020. Operating as One MedStar and aligning with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local Departments of Health, MedStar Healths COVID-19 preparations and response were guided by two critical drivers: providing a safe care environment for patients and associates and ensuring operational continuity to fulfill our core mission of caring for our communities. These efforts included adding hospital beds in preparation for patient surges; balancing hospital admissions by using urgent care sites as frontline providers and facilitating telehealth interactions for virtual care and referrals; utilizing home health services to transition care from inpatient settings, ambulatory facilities, and a convention center field hospital; and standing up more than 40 COVID-19 testing locations. Underlying these actions is MedStar Healths commitment to the highest levels of quality and safety, reflected by the systemwide implementation of universal face masking for patients and associates, and acquisition of Personal Protective Equipment at usage levels 10 times normal use.

Cardiology research is responsible for coordinating and performing cardiovascular research, dedicated to developing new technologies and strategies to enhance patient care and save lives. Areas of specialization include vulnerable plaque, angiogenesis, device development, cardiac imaging, and genetic determinates of coronary disease.

MedStar Health Research Institute's Health Services Research (HSR) is responsible for coordinating and performing research on the delivery of care across the entire MedStar Health system. Specifically, HSR seeks to improve the way healthcare is delivered with a premium on conducting research related to patient safety and quality, health outcomes, health equity, improve implementation in population health, and ambulatory medicine.
