We have partnered with Miami-Dade County Transportation & Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces departments. Our board of directors and sub-committee members include architects, designers, urban planners, biking advocates, marketing experts, philanthropists, legal and accounting professionals, business leaders, real estate developers, and more. Master Plan: Through a competitive process, James Corner Field Operations of New York City was selected to create the master plan for The Underline 10 mile linear park and urban trail. With input collected from surveys and 6 public meetings the plan was completed in late December, 2015. During 2019 Miami-Dade County continued the construction of the first phase of The Underline: Brickell Backyard from the Miami River Greenway Connection to SW 13th street (Coral Way). Throughout this process, FUL has compensated James Corner Field Operations to serve as the owner representative to ensure The Underlines vision is being realized through construction. In this segment, there is a proposed outdoor gym with flex basketball and soccer courts, performance stage, gaming tables, communal dining table, food concessions, native vegetation with butterfly gardens, lighting, seating and The Underline biking and walking paths. There will also be improved biking and walking connections at 7th, 8th and 13th streets. In 2019, Miami-Dade County released a construction bid package for Phase 2 of The Underline from SW 13th street (Coral Way) to SW 19th avenue) and for contracted a trail alignment study for the remaining 7 miles of the underline. Friends of The Underline also conducted a special district study, exploring the development potential along the 10-miles linear park. Staff wrote numerous grant proposals and helped the County secure a federal grant of more than $22 million. Additionally, staff secured grants from local partners to help with future programming of The Underline. Finally, The Underline staff pursued legislation to help ensure the long-term maintenance of the park as well as the creation of an infrastructure to facilitate future programming and sponsorship opportunities.
