Organizations Filed Purposes: Families Helping Families of Greater New Orleans connects and educates families of children with disabilities and special health care needs, free of charge. We teach families to advocate for their children with disabilities and adults to advocate for themselves, navigate support systems, and find joy, hope, and success in spite of challenges. Through sharing personal experiences, our knowledgeable trained staff is uniquely positioned to increase the confidence of other families and improve outcomes throughout their lifetime.

1) Peer to Peer Support - FHF of GNO provides peer-to-peer support by trained, knowledgeable staff who are also parents of children with disabilities, always free of charge. This support is provided to other parents of children with disabilities, professionals that serve families impacted by a child with a disability and individuals themselves with disabilities. The service delivery systems parents are often dependent on, is very complex for many parents. Our staff has first-hand experience using these systems and developed relationships with staff in all of these systems to help with this navigation. Many of these systems provide funding to us to help parents access their systems with our support. Peer-to-Peer support is the number one reason parents reach out us. After hearing from medical professionals and education systems about their child's deficits, they often then want to speak to a parent that has day-to-day knowledge of raising a child similar to there child. We provide them hope and guide them to understand that raising a child with a disability isn't burdensome, but different and we teach them to recognize their child's strengths versus just the deficits. During this fiscal year, we received over 6,500 requests for support and provided support to each of them. 2) Education and Training - Informed, educated parents and professionals become the best advocates for individuals with disabilities and special health care needs. Therefore, we put a huge emphasis on education and training in all service delivery areas. We provided 125 in-person trainings and webinars in all service delivery areas. Our service delivery areas are education, social services, human services, and healthcare systems. Some of our trainings include topics like Special Education Rights, Discipline Regulations, Behavior Management, Applied Behavior Analysis, Transitioning from School to Adulthood, Communication Skills, Self-Advocacy Skills, Advocacy Skills, Communication Skills, Community Services for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities, Organization Skills, Parental Support, Special Needs Trusts, Age of Majority, Driving with A Disability, Independent Living Skills, How to Get and Keep a Job and More. 3) Information and Outreach - Families and professionals are provided with a wealth of information that helps them make informed decisions about their children with disabilities. We are very active on social media, offer a robust website with lots of resources, publish a monthly digital magazine, Exceptional Times, and provide a wide variety of disability-related resources at the request to parents and professionals. Last fiscal year we provided over 500,000 pieces of resources to individuals requesting them and at community outreach events. Additionally, our staff actively participated on 45 committees throughout the fiscal year as a parent representative providing the parent voice at 300 meetings. All of the above are successful as evidenced by our evaluation process. Users of our services consistently rank us as one of their most important resources. 98% of individuals report our support is useful, relevant, and high quality. 95% of individuals report our services have made a positive impact of the lives of their child with a disability.
