MOORE BUDDIES MENTORING'S MISSION IS TO CHAMPION SUCCESSFUL YOUTH THROUGH MENTORING.

THE MY PATH (POSITIVE CHOICES, ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT, TAKING CHARGE OF MY FUTURE, AND HIGH VALUES) PROGRAM IS AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM FOR COURT-REFERRED JUVENILES. THIS PROGRAM IS FUNDED THROUGH OUR COUNTY'S JCPC. THE AGE OF THE PARTICIPANTS IS 14-17 YEARS OLD, AND THEY ARE CURRENTLY ON PROBATION. THESE YOUTH ARE AT-RISK OF FAILING, OR DROPPING OUT OF SCHOOL AND OFTEN LIVE IN POVERTY, WITH NEGLECT AND/OR ABUSE, AND LIVE WITH ADDICTIONS AND INCARCERATIONS IN THE FAMILY. IF INTERVENTIONS ARE NOT MADE IN THEIR LIFE, THEY RUN THE HIGH RISK OF FOLLOWING THE SAME PATHWAY OF POVERTY, CRIME, AND ADDICTION. THE GROUP MEETS TWO OR THREE DAYS PER WEEK AFTER SCHOOL AND WORK ON A CURRICULUM THAT HELPS THE TEENS TO REALIZE THE CONNECTION FROM THE TRAUMA THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED, TO THE DECISIONS THEY HAVE MADE, THUS TEACHING THE KIDS HOW TO MAKE BETTER CHOICES. THEY WORK ON SOCIAL SKILLS, INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS, AND WORK WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR JOB SHADOWING AND WITH OTHER AGENCIES TO OFFER EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS FOR THE YOUTH TO DISCOVER THEIR INTERESTS AND ABILITIES AND BECOME AWARE OF LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR THEM TO HAVE A BETTER LIFE FOR THEMSELVES AND BREAK THE CYCLE OF GENERATIONAL DEPENDENCE.

OUR IN-SCHOOL MENTORING PROGRAM IS IN TEN LOCAL NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOLS. THE INITIAL PROGRAM WAS FUNDED THROUGH A FEDERAL GRANT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION. THE PROJECT IS CURRENTLY IN ITS FIFTH YEAR AND FUNDED THROUGH UNITED WAY OF MOORE COUNTY AND DONORS FROM THE MOORE COUNTY COMMUNITY. OUR MENTORING COORDINATOR PAIRS CHILDREN AT TEN SCHOOLS WITH COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO MEET FOR ONE HOUR A WEEK. THIS PROGRAM HAS HAD A GREAT IMPACT ON THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND THE SCHOOLS. STUDENTS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN IN-SCHOOL MENTORING EXPLORE CAREERS, GET ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE, COMPLETE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS, TAKE EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS, ATTEND SUMMER CAMP, PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY EVENTS AND MEET WITH A MENTOR FOR 1 HOUR EACH WEEK.

THE COMMUNITY MENTORING PROGRAM MATCHES ADULT VOLUNTEER MENTORS WHO ARE WILLING TO GIVE THEIR TIME, ENERGY, AND COMPASSION TO A MOORE COUNTY YOUTH FOR ONE YEAR. OUR MENTORS WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 6 AND 17 AND FACE MANY CHALLENGES. A MENTOR CAN HELP SET AND ACHIEVE GOALS, IMPROVE BEHAVIORS AND RAISE SELF-ESTEEM. OUR MENTORS SPEND AN AVERAGE OF 1-2 HOURS A WEEK FOR A YEAR WITH THEIR YOUNG PERSON WORKING ON GOALS AND SKILL BUILDING. COMMUNITY MENTORING OFFERS ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE THESE FRIENDSHIPS. THIS PROGRAM IS FUNDED BY THE JUVENILE CRIMES PREVENTION PROGRAM AND FROM DONATIONS FROM THE INDIVIDUALS, CHURCHES AND BUSINESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY.
