St. Peter's built 24 state-of-the-art operating rooms in 2011.At St. Peter's, surgeons operate in the area's newest and best surgical suites, featuring the latest diagnostic and surgical technology. It's why more than 16,704 surgeries are performed at St. Peter's each year.In St. Peter's operating rooms, surgeons view patient X-rays on large television monitors rather than traditional X-ray films. These "filmless" operating rooms give doctors a more accurate picture of a patient's condition. In hepatobiliary (liver, biliary, pancreas) surgery, St. Peter's was the first hospital in the Capital District to use the Spyglass Direct Visualization System - a fiber-optic camera, about the size of a pencil point, that is inserted into the upper digestive tract and threaded through the stomach and into the bile ducts. This life-saving tool allows doctors to quickly and precisely locate and examine tissue - without having to perform laparoscopic surgery.Supported by an expert support staff, surgeons at St. Peter's have the tools and the advanced technology to transform and save lives.Minimally invasive procedures, including robotic, computer-assisted and image-guided surgeries, are performed in the areas of cardiac, vascular, gynecologic, neurological, orthopedic, otolaryngologic, thoracic, urologic and general surgery. Types of procedures being performed at St. Peter's Hospital:- Bariatric Surgery - Breast Surgery - Cardiac Surgery - Colorectal Surgery - Dental/Maxillofacial Surgery - General Surgery - Gynecologic Oncology - Gynecological Surgery - Hepatobiliary (Liver, Biliary, Pancreas) - Minimally-invasive Surgery - Neurosurgery - Orthopaedic Surgery - Otolaryngology Surgery - Pediatric Surgery - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery - Surgical Oncology/Cancer - Thoracic Surgery - Urological Surgery - Vascular Surgery Robotic Surgery: The da Vinci Surgical SystemThe surgeon's surgical capabilities are enhanced by the da Vinci surgical system, a totally "intuitive" laparoscopic surgical robot. The system is so precise, the instruments recheck their position by computer 1,500 times per second. St. Peter's gynecologic oncologists were the first in their specialty in New York state to use the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system. This new system integrates robotics and extremely sophisticated computer technology with the skills of the surgeon. It allows the surgeon to perform minimally invasive procedures in a manner never experienced before. Robotic-assisted laparoscopy combines dexterity and precision with advanced 3-D imaging to overcome the surgical limitations of a standard laparoscopy. The new technology gives surgeons precise control and visualization, bringing a whole new dimension and flexibility to surgery. The system's camera gives the surgeon a highly detailed, three-dimensional view of the patient's body. Advanced imaging allows much greater precision, thereby allowing for small incisions, more exact placement of sutures and more exact use of the operating instruments. In addition, it is possible for patients to return to regular activities in one to two weeks, instead of the traditional six weeks that may be required for a complete recovery. In orthopaedic surgery, certain patients can have a total hip replacement thanks to the Birmingham hip.In urologic surgery, St. Peter's also uses the Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), a minimally invasive laser system that can shrink an enlarged prostate.Other laser procedures at St. Peter's include the Nd:Yag Laser, which shrinks esophageal, bronchial and bladder tumors and urethral polyps; the Diode Laser, which is used by ophthalmologic. Ophthalmologic is the area in which surgeons treat retinopathy of infants; and the CO2 Laser, which can remove or vaporize certain types of skin lesions, as well as shrink or remove certain types of throat cancers and lesions. It is also used by gynecology, urology and ENT Surgeons.St. Peter's offers many more advanced surgical procedures, including:- Mammosite(R) breast radiation therapy; - Robotic gynecologic and prostate surgery; - Breast MRI; - Needle localization; - Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT); - PET (positron emission tomography); - Computed tomography (CT or CAT scanning); - Neurosign 100 Facial Nerve Monitor; - Uterine balloon thermotherapy; - Video assisted endoscopy; - Image guided neurosurgery; - Sentinel node gamma guidance system; - Shock wave lithotripsy; and - Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)Surgical Services: In July 2013- June 2014, St. Peter's Hospital's operating room serviced 8,613 inpatient surgical cases (Orthopedic - 2,991, General Surgery - 1,241, Neurological - 1,126, Thoracic - 566, Gyn & Gyn Oncology - 328, Gen Colorectal - 424 and various others).
