Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MUSEUM'S MISSION STATEMENT IS: "TO DISCOVER, INTERPRET, AND DISSEMINATE - THROUGH SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND EDUCATION - KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HUMAN CULTURES, THE NATURAL WORLD, AND THE UNIVERSE."

NAT HISTORY MUSEUM, PLANETARIUM, COLLECTIONS, LIBRARY, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, GRADUATE SCHOOL (PH.D./ COMP BIOLOGY & MAT/EDUCATION), EDUCATION & EXHIBITIONS (SCH O).

SCIENCE-SINCE ITS FOUNDING, THE MUSEUM HAS PURSUED A SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROGRAM TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIOLOGICAL, PHYSICAL, AND CULTURAL WORLD. THE MUSEUM'S FULL-TIME SCIENTIFIC STAFF OF APPROX 175 WORK IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, PALEONTOLOGY, ASTROPHYSICS, EARTH AND PLANETARY SCIENCES AND ANTHROPOLOGY, AND PUBLISH IN PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS. PRIOR TO COVID-19, THE MUSEUM SPONSORED OVER 100 FIELD EXPEDITIONS ANNUALLY, ENHANCING THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION OF OVER 34 MILLION SPECIMENS AND ARTIFACTS. THE MUSEUM CONTINUES ITS PH.D. AND MASTER'S PROGRAMS ONLINE AND ONSITE THROUGH ITS GILDER GRADUATE SCHOOL, THE ONLY PH.D. AND MAT DEGREE PROGRAM OF ANY MUSEUM IN THE U.S.

EDUCATION AND OTHER PUBLIC PROGRAMS-THE MUSEUM'S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SERVES 4,500 TEACHERS EACH YEAR ONSITE AND, PARTICULARLY DURING COVID-19, ONLINE. THE MUSEUM'S SIGNATURE SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM, URBAN ADVANTAGE, HAS GROWN TO REACH 287 MIDDLE SCHOOLS ACROSS ALL FIVE NYC BOROUGHS. THE MUSEUM'S MAT PROGRAM HELPS MITIGATE THE CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED SCIENCE TEACHERS, AND PLACES GRADUATES IN HIGH NEEDS SCHOOLS. PRE-COVID, APPROXIMATELY 5 MILLION ON-SITE VISITORS INCLUDING APPROXIMATELY 500,000 SCHOOL AND CAMP GROUP VISITORS WOULD TYPICALLY EXPERIENCE THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS ANNUALLY AND MANY OF THESE PROGRAMS MOVED TO ONLINE DELIVERY DURING COVID-19.

EXHIBITION-THE MUSEUM IS TYPICALLY OPEN 363 DAYS A YEAR, BUT IS CURRENTLY ON A REDUCED SCHEDULE OF 5 DAYS PER WEEK DUE TO COVID-19. ALMOST ALL OF ITS MORE THAN 40 PERMANENT EXHIBITION HALLS, SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND PLANETARIUM SHOWS HAVE NOW REOPENED AFTER COVID-RELATED CLOSINGS. WHILE DIMINISHED DURING GOVERNMENT-MANDATED COVID-19 CLOSURES AND REDUCED OPERATING CAPACITY, THE MUSEUM HAS A ROBUST SCHEDULE OF SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND PLANETARIUM SHOWS IT DESIGNS AND PRODUCES, WHICH ALSO TRAVEL TO VENUES AROUND THE U.S. AND INTERNATIONALLY WHEN PERMITTED BY SAFETY AND HEALTH GUIDELINES, SUPPLEMENTED WITH EDUCATIONAL CONTENT AND APPS AND OTHER WEB-BASED RESOURCES FOR LEARNING.
