Organizations Filed Purposes: THE DEMOCRACY COLLABORATIVE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2000 TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF DEMOCRACY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AND TO PROMOTE EMERGING STRATEGIES AND INNOVATIONS IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THAT ENHANCE DEMOCRATIC LIFE. IN PARTICULAR, OUR WORK FOCUSES ON THE CRITICAL ROLE LOCAL ECONOMIC STABILITY PLAYS IN STRENGTHENING CIVIC LIFE, PROVIDING MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT, ENHANCING FAMILY SECURITY, AND PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY. THE DEMOCRACY COLLABORATIVE SPONSORS A RANGE OF EDUCATION PROJECTS INVOLVING RESEARCH, TRAINING, AND COMMUNITY-FOCUSED WORK DESIGNED TO INCREASE SUPPORT FOR WEALTH BUILDING INNOVATIONS AT THE LOCAL LEVEL.

THROUGH OUR COMMUNITY WEALTH BUILDING PRACTICE, IN 2019, THE DEMOCRACY COLLABORATIVE PROVIDED GUIDANCE, EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING PROGRAMS, RESEARCH, AND PROGRAM SUPPORT TO COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE NATION - AND NOW INTERNATIONALLY -WHO ARE SEEKING TO DEVELOP COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES THAT AIM TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY FOR DISADVANTAGED INDIVIDUALS AND DISINVESTED NEIGHBORHOODS. FOR EXAMPLE: WE SUPPORTED PROJECTS WITH CITY AND INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS IN MULTIPLE COMMUNITIES INCLUDING MEMPHIS, TN, SANTA FE, NM, ATLANTA, GA, AND WASHINGTON, D.C., AND THE CITY OF AMSTERDAM TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO LEVERAGE INSTITUTIONAL INVESTMENTS TO CREATE JOB AND WEALTH BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNEMPLOYED INDIVIDUALS; AND AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, WE ALSO CONTINUED TO SUPPORT THE EVERGREEN COOPERATIVE INITIATIVE IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, INCLUDING. EMBEDDING KEY PERSONNEL TO SUPPORT THE LAUNCH AND OPERATIONS OF THE FUND FOR EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP, WHICH HAS BECOME NATIONAL MODELS OF EQUITABLE AND INCLUSIVE INVESTMENT.

IN 2019, WE AUTHORED AND PUBLISHED SEVERAL MAJOR RESEARCH PAPERS AND PUBLICATIONS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS RELATED TO ADVANCING A MORE DEMOCRATIC ECONOMY, INCLUDING "MEDICINE FOR ALL: THE CASE FOR A PUBLIC OPTION IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY," "MISSION LED EMPLOYEE OWNED FIRMS: THE BEST OF THE BEST", "ANCHOR COLLABORATIVES: BUILDING BRIDGES WITH PLACE-BASED PARTNERSHIPS AND ANCHOR INSTITUTIONS, AND SEVERAL BOOKS INCLUDING "THE MAKING OF A DEMOCRATIC ECONOMY,". OUR STAFF ALSO AUTHORED A NUMBER OF SCHOLARLY ARTICLES AND OP EDS IN PUBLICATIONS SUCH AS THE BOSTON GLOBE, GRANTMAKERS IN HEALTH, GOVERNING, STAT, AND THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INNOVATION REVIEW, AS WELL AS ON NUMEROUS BLOGS AND WEBSITES. WE ALSO CONTINUED TO PUBLISH RESEARCH THROUGH MULTIPLE PROPRIETARY WEBSITES, ISSUED MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTERS TO A SUBSCRIBER BASE OF APPROXIMATELY 20,000 PEOPLE AND PRODUCED AND HOSTED MULTIPLE WEBINAR AND PODCASTS SERIES. AS PRESENTERS, PANELISTS AND DISCUSSANTS, WE PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCES FOR PUBLIC AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.

OUR ANCHOR INSTITUTION PROJECT CONTINUED TO CARRY OUT RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE UNIVERSITIES, HOSPITALS, COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS AND OTHER PLACE-BASED ANCHORS PLAY IN EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR COMMUNITY AND ITS RESIDENTS. THROUGH OUR NATIONAL "HEALTHCARE ANCHOR NETWORK" INITIATIVE, WE DEEPENED ENGAGEMENT WITH NONPROFIT HEALTHCARE LEADERS AT APPROXIMATELY 50 HEALTH SYSTEMS, TO HELP THESE SYSTEMS USE THEIR HIRING, PURCHASING AND INVESTING POWER TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. WE WORKED WITH THESE SYSTEMS TO INCUBATE AND SCALE STRATEGIES THAT ESTABLISH THE ANCHOR MISSION AS A HEALTHCARE SECTOR PRIORITY AND TO LEAD INNOVATION IN ANCHOR MISSION IMPLEMENTATION, BOTH INTERNALLY AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY, WITH A NETWORK GOAL TO DEFINE THE HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP STANDARD AND PROMOTE INDUSTRY COLLABORATION FOR PROACTIVELY ADDRESSING ECONOMIC AND RACIAL INEQUITIES IN COMMUNITY CONDITIONS THAT CREATE POOR HEALTH (OR WHAT ARE SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS STRUCTURAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH). WE ALSO PROVIDED COACHING AND FACILITATED PEER LEARNING COHORTS WITH PLACE-BASED ANCHOR INSTITUTION COLLABORATIVES IN MULTIPLE CITIES AND SUPPORTED SIMILAR COLLABORATIONS WITH HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS. THROUGH THIS ANCHOR INSTITUTION PROJECT, WE WERE INVITED TO PRESENT AT NUMEROUS UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITAL CONFERENCES NATIONWIDE.
