Organizations Filed Purposes: RIVERBEND'S PURPOSE IS TO FOSTER AN AWARENESS, APPRECIATION, AND UNDERSTANDING OF OUR TOTAL ENVIRONMENT THROUGH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. BY GROWING BOTH THE LOVE OF NATURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY, WE AIM TO INSPIRE ACTION THAT CONTRIBUTES TO A HEALTHIER PLANET FOR ALL. AT RIVERBEND, WE WORK TO DEVELOP ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY USING TESTED EDUCATION TOOLS GROUNDED IN SCIENCE. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS ESSENTIAL TO LIVE IN AND CARE FOR OUR NATURAL WORLD. RIVERBEND'S NATURE-BASED STEM EDUCATION PROGRAMS ADVANCE ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY, APPRECIATION OF THE NATURAL WORLD AND OUR PLACE IN IT. THROUGH INQUIRY BASED LEARNING STUDENTS HAVE DIRECT EXPERIENCES WITH NATURE AND THE RELEVANT LEARNING THAT ADVANCES CURIOSITY, CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVE APPROACHES, AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS. RIVERBEND'S STRATEGIC PLAN 2018 TO 2020 FOCUSES ON THREE PRIMARY GOALS: 1. EXPAND SERVICES AND INCREASE MISSION IMPACT OF FORMAL, SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS 2. ESTABLISH A STRONG PUBLIC IDENTITY 3. INCREASE FOUNDATIONA

RIVERBEND TEACHES ENVIRONMENTAL PRINCIPLES TO CHILDREN THROUGH A DIRECT CONNECTION WITH NATURE INSPIRING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND ACTION.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS INCLUDE: 1. FIELD TRIPS: SCHOOLS AND OTHER GROUPS VISIT RIVERBEND'S PRESERVE FOR FULL OR HALF-DAY PROGRAMS 2. RIVERBEND ON THE ROAD: ONE-TIME OR SERIES CLASSROOM VISITS AT SCHOOLS 3. AFTER SCHOOL NATURE CLUBS: SERIES OF SEASONAL VISITS TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND OTHER PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS 4. AQUAPONICS: AWARD-WINNING COMPREHENSIVE NATURE-BASED STEM PROGRAM 5. ACCESS PROGRAMS: COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS WHICH SERVE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN LIVING IN URBAN COMMUNITIES AND 5. TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. IN 2019, RIVERBEND DELIVERED 28,237 SCHOOL PROGRAM VISITS ALONE, WITH 13,584 OF THOSE VISITS SERVING STUDENTS LIVING IN UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES. APPROXIMATELY 70% OF VISITS TAKE PLACE OFF-SITE. OUR AQUAPONICS PROGRAM SERVED 2,526 STUDENTS.

SUMMER CAMP - THIS WEEKLY CAMP IS FOR CHILDREN FROM AGES 3 TO 14 FOR ELEVEN WEEKS EVERY SUMMER. IN 2019 WE WELCOMED 602 CAMPERS ADDING UP TO A TOTAL OF 4,820 CAMP DAYS. RIVERBEND'S CREATIVE CAMP LESSON PLANS INCORPORATE CURIOSITY, EXPLORATION, AND INQUIRY. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT WHEN CHILDREN SPEND TIME IN NATURE, THEY ARE NOT ONLY MORE RECEPTIVE TO LEARNING ABOUT THE TASK AT HAND BUT ALSO LEARNING IN GENERAL. RIVERBEND EDUCATORS USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOURAGE CAMPERS TO PRACTICE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS LIKE RESILIENCY, SELF-REFLECTION, AND GRIT. MOST IMPORTANTLY, RIVERBEND CAMPERS FALL IN LOVE WITH NATURE AND CARRY THOSE MEMORIES THROUGH LIFE
