Organizations Filed Purposes: THE COUNCILS MISSION IS TO TEACH ENGLISH COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND PROVIDED LITERACY RESOURCES TO EMPOWER LOW-INCOME ADULTS AND CHILDREN TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT AND CONFIDENT IN THEIR ABILITY TO ACHIEVE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS

FAMILY LITERACY:HEAD START LITERACY PROGRAM: WE PARTNERED WITH LOUDOUN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE A LITERACY COMPONENT TO CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. 102 STUDENTS RECEIVED 114 READING INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS, 197 FAMILY MEMBERS ATTENDED THE 2 FAMILY LITERACY NIGHTS WE HOSTED, AND WE DISRIBUTED OVER 1380 BOOKS TO STUDENTS. 80% OF STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED INCREASED POST-TEST SCORES.SWEET DREAMS PROGRAM: EACH WEEK, WE READ AND CONDUCT LITERACY ACTIVITIES WITH CHILDREN RESIDING AT THE VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA HOMELESS SHELTER. WE PROVIDED 28 HOURS OF READING AND DISTRIBUTED 108 BOOKS TO APPROXIMATELY 40 RESIDENTS.BOOK BUILDER PROGRAM: WE PARTNERED WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS,FAITH ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES TO COLLECT DONATED BOOKS FOR CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY. THESE BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO LOCAL PARTNER ORGANZIATIONS ALSO WORKING DIRECTLY WITH CHILDREN. 17 COMMUNITY PARTNERS RECEIVED OVER 6,313 BOOKS. STARTING TOWARDS EXCELLENCE IN PRESCHOOL LITERACY PROGRAM: OUR PARTNERSHIP STEP PROGRAM ALLOWED US TO REACH MORE THAN 303 LOW INCOME PRE-SCHOOLERS WITH LITERACY INSTRUCTION, 370 FAMILY MEMBERS ATTENDED 3 FAMILY EVENTS, AND 2,150 BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED.BABY BOOK BUNDLES: WE PROVIDED LOW-INCOME EXPECTANT MOTHERS WITH NEW BABY BOOKS AND LITERACY INFORMATION. 200 BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO 100 PARTICIPANTS.FALL FOR READING: A FUN, FREE EVENT FOR FAMILIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LOUDOUN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY TO CELEBRATE THE JOY OF READING. 175 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT RUN BY STAFF AND TRAINED VOLUNTEERS.

ADULT LITERACY: MORE THAN 543 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN ONE OF OUR 43 ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) CLASSES OFFERED IN THE SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL. CLASSES WERE HELD IN 15 SITES ACROSS THE COUNTY. EVERY PARTICIPATING STUDENT ACHIEVED AT LEAST ONE SHORT-TERM GOAL OBJECTIVE. ADDITIONALLY ABOUT 20 STUDENTS ATTENDED ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING AND SPENT OVER 400 HOURS TOWARD GOAL ATTAINMENT WITH A 95% GOAL ATTAINMENT RATE. TWO STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY RECEIVED GED INSTRUCTION. TWO RECEIVED INSTRUCTION AND 1 ATTAINED THEIR CITIZENSHIP. WE PROVIDED 48 CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS THAT INCLUDED FINANCIAL LITERACY. WE PROVIDED JOBSITE LITERACY TO 6 PARTICIPATING EMPLOYERS SERVING 49 STUDENTS. 22 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN OUR HEALTH LITERACY CLASSES.
