Organizations Filed Purposes: TO DEVELOP PHYSICIAN THOUGHT LEADERS THROUGH INQUIRY, RESEARCH, AND DISCOVERY, USING AN INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM BASED UPON ADULT LEARNING METHODS IN A PATIENT-CENTERED CONTEXT. OUR GRADUATES ARE PHYSICIANS WITH OUTSTANDING CLINICAL SKILLS AND SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED RESEARCH CAPABILITIES WHO WILL REMAIN LIFE-LONG LEARNERS. THEY HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERPROFESSIONALISM TO ENABLE THEM TO MORE EFFECTIVELY FUNCTION AS PART OF A MODERN HEALTHCARE TEAM.

TO DEVELOP & GRADUATE PHYSICIANS WITH OUTSTANDING CLINICAL SKILLS AND ENHANCED RESEARCH CAPABILITIES.

DURING 2017-2018 ADMISSIONS CYCLE THE VIRGINIA TECH CARILION SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ADMISSIONS STAFF PROCESSED 4483 APPLICATIONS. THAT TOTAL NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS IS THE SECOND-HIGHEST VOLUME OF APPLICATIONS EVER RECEIVED AND REPRESENTS AN INCREASE OVER LAST YEAR OF MORE THAN 500 APPLICATIONS. MEMBERS OF THE NEW CLASS UNDERGO AN INTENSIVE ORIENTATION WHERE THEY ARE BEING INTRODUCED TO EVERYTHING FROM THE SCHOOL'S CURRICULUM, LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, AND ACADEMIC STANDARDS TO POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, FINANCIAL AID, AND STUDENT COUNSELING. NEXT THEY START THEIR REGULAR CLASS SCHEDULE, WHICH IS ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY. STUDENTS AT THE VIRGINIA TECH CARILION SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PARTICIPATE IN A UNIQUE PROBLEM BASED LEARNING CURRICULUM, WHICH CENTERS TEACHING IN SMALL GROUPS BASED ON REAL PATIENT CASES.UPON ADMISSION, THE CLASS OF 2021 WAS COMPRISED OF 22 WOMEN AND 20 MEN. THIRTEEN MATRICULANTS WERE RESIDENTS OF VIRGINIA AND TWELVE HAD ATTENDED UNDERGRAD IN A VIRGINIA COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. VIRGINIA TECH AND THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA WERE EACH REPRESENTED BY FIVE NEW STUDENTS, AND UNC-CHAPEL HILL WAS TIED WITH GEORGETOWN, EACH HAVING THREE OF THEIR ALUM IN THE CLASS. OVERALL, TWENTY-SIX DIFFERENT CAMPUSES WERE REPRESENTED IN THIS CLASS.THE VIRGINIA TECH CARILION SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CLASS OF 2018 WELCOMED 40 NEW DOCTORS DURING ITS FIFTH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY. THIS SUMMER THE NEW DOCTORS WILL BEGIN RESIDENCY PROGRAMS REPRESENTING 15 SPECIALTIES IN 16 STATES. THE MOST REPRESENTED SPECIALTIES AMONG THE CLASS INCLUDE GENERAL SURGERY, INTERNAL MEDICINE, OBGYN, AND DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY.THE VIRGINIA TECH CARILION SCHOOL OF MEDICINE OPENED ITS DOORS TO ITS FIRST CLASS IN AUGUST 2010 AND HAS SINCE GRADUATED FIVE CLASSES, EACH WITH A 100 PERCENT RESIDENCY MATCH RATE. THE SCHOOL IS ACCREDITED BY THE LIAISON COMMITTEE ON MEDICAL EDUCATION AND THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS.
