CONSERVATION HATCHERY - OPERATED A CONSERVATION HATCHERY ESTABLISHED WITH NOAA UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE WASHINGTON SHELLFISH INITIATIVE. DEDICATED IN 2014, THE KENNETH K CHEW CENTER FOR SHELLFISH RESEARCH AND RESTORATION SERVES AS A HUB FOR PROPAGATING AND RESTORING NATIVE SPECIES AND DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TO MITGATE THE IMPACTS TO MARINE RESOURCES DUE TO OCEAN ACIDIFICATION. THE HATCHERY IS OPERATED BY PUGET SOUND RESTORATION FUND AND HOUSED AT THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATIONS (NOAA) MANCHESTER RESEARCH STATION IN MANCHESTER, WA. 2019 OPERATIONS INCLUDING MAINTAINING YEAR-ROUND ALGAE CULTURE, PROPAGATING AND REARING NATIVE SPECIES (OLYMPIA OYSTERS, PINTO ABALONE, BULL KELP, SUGAR KELP, SEA CUCUMBERS, AND BASKET COCKLES), ADAPTIVELY MANAGING CONSERVATION PROTOCOLS TO ENSURE GENETIC DIVERSITY, AND CONDUCTING RESEARCH.

OLYMPIA OYSTER RESTORATION & OTHER SHELLFISH PROJECTS-COMPLETED A 15-ACRE OYSTER RESTORATION PROJECT IN SINCLAIR INLET. PRODUCED RESTORATION-GRADE OLYMPIA OYSTER SEED FOR PRIORITY NATIVE OYSTER RESTORATION SITES IN PUGET SOUND, INCLUDING DRAYTON HARBOR AND SEQUIM BAY. CONTINUED MONOITORING NATIVE OYSTER RECRUITMENT AT 25 SITES.

KELP INVESTIGATION - CONTINUED A MULTI-YEAR KELP INVESTIGATION WITH FUNDING FROM THE PAUL G. ALLEN FAMILY FOUNDATION AND THE US NAVY TO DETERMINE WHETHER KELP CULTIVATION CAN MITGATE OCEAN ACIDIFICATION LOCALLY BY IMPROVING SEAWATER CONDITIONS FOR SENSITIVE SPECIES. 2019 ACTIVITY INCLUDED: ANALYZING RESULTS OF CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, AND KEP PRODUCTION, DRAFTING A FINAL REPORT, AND IDENTIFYING POSSIBLE FOLLOW-UP PUBLICATIONS. THE PROJECT IMPLEMENTS A KEY EARLY ACTION RECOMMENDED BY THE WASHINGTON STATE BLUE RIBBON PANEL ON OCEAN ACIDIFICATION, A GOVERNOR-APPOINTED PANEL CONVENED IN 2012 TO CHART A COURSE FOR ADDRESSING THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF OCEAN ACIDIFICATION.
