Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE ALASKA HUMANITIES FORUM IS TO CONNECT ALASKANS THROUGH STORIES, IDEAS, AND EXPERIENCES THAT POSITIVELY CHANGE LIVES AND EMPOWER COMMUNITIES.

HUMANITIES COUNCIL: HUMANITIES PROGRAMS ENCOMPASSED A WIDE RANGE OF HUMANITIES TOPICS INCLUDING ARTS, A LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, ALASKAN HISTORY, AND THE ANNUAL GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES. THESE PROGRAMS HELP PASS ON THE VALUES, METHODS, AND WISDOM OF THE HUMANITIES TO FUTURE GENERATIONS. THE ALASKA HUMANITIES FORUM ISSUED GRANTS TO INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL ORGANIZATIONS, WHICH FUNDED HUMANITIES-BASED PROJECTS IN SMALL COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE STATE. PROJECTS CULTIVATE ENJOYMENT OF THE HUMANITIES IN DISCIPLINES SUCH AS CULTURAL STUDIES, ARCHAEOLOGY, ETHICS, PHILOSOPHY, HISTORY, LINGUISTICS, FOLKLORE, LANGUAGES, THEATRICAL ARTS, AND FILM.

EDUCATION PROGRAM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING SUB PROGRAMS: URBAN RURAL EXCHANGE: THIS PROGRAM AIMS TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN URBAN AND RURAL ALASKANS BY:(1)BUILDING MUTUAL RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING, 2)FOSTERING A STATEWIDE SENSE OF COMMUNITY THROUGH CROSS-CULTURAL IMMERSION. WE DO THIS THROUGH TWO APPROACHES: THE SISTER SCHOOL EXCHANGE AND THE EDUCATOR CROSS-CULTURAL IMMERSION. TAKE WING ALASKA: THIS PROGRAM ASSISTS STUDENTS FROM THE LOWER KUSKOKWIM SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH THE TRANSITION TO URBAN, POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. BEGINNING AT THE END OF THE SOPHOMORE YEAR AND CONTINUING THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION, EACH STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN THREE INTERGRATION EXPERIENCES ON UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES. CREATING CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS AND INSIGHT TO THE NATIVE PEOPLES, THEIR CULTURE AND THEIR WAYS OF TEACHING, LEARNING AND LIVING. CREATING CULTURAL COMPETENCE: THIS PROGRAM ASSISTS NEWLY HIRED TEACHERS TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS THAT HELP THEM CONNECT WITH THE PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES, AND REGION WHERE THEY WILL BE TEACHING. THE ALASKA HUMANITIES FORUM PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITIES, ALASKA NATIVE ORGANIZATIONS, AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE THREE RURAL REGIONS TO PROVIDE A CREATING CULTURAL COMPETENCE PROGRAM FOR NEWLY HIRED TEACHERS. IN THIS PROGRAM, NEWLY HIRED TEACHERS PARTICIPATE ALONGSIDE ELDERS, CULTURE BEARER, LOCAL YOUTH, AND PEERS IN A CULTURAL IMMERSION DURING THE SUMMER UNDER THE STRUCTURE OF A UNIVERSITY-LEVEL MULTICULTURAL STUDIES COURSE.

SALMON PROGRAM: THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM IS TO ACHIEVE A MORE SUSTAINABLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SALMON AND PEOPLE. THE PROGRAM SELECTS 16 INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE PROVEN LEADERS FROM DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS. THESE "SALMON FELLOWS" WILL BE ENGAGED IN AN 18 MONTH PROGRAM, FOCUSED ON PROMOTING THE FOLLOWING: PERSONAL GROWTH,NETWORK GROWTH, AND RELATIONSHIP GROWTH. EACH FELLOW IS AWARDED A 5,000 GRANT UP FRONT, AND 5,000 AT THE END OF A SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM. THE THREE YEAR PROGRAM ALLOWS FOR TWO COHORTS OF FELLOWS. OTHER PROGRAM EXPENDITURES ARE RELATED TO THE SALMON FELLOW GATHERINGS PROJECTS.
