KNOM Radio Mission exists to be a conduit for encountering Christ, embracing culture, empowering growth, and engaging the listener in Western Alaska. The work of KNOM is steeped in its values: to be a friend and companion, provide respectful service based on Catholic ideals. KNOM's listeners (numbering 20,000-30,000 people) are spread across 100,000 square miles of remote Alaska. Most listeners live in villages along the Bering Sea Coast and eastward toward the Alaskan Interior. Even though internet has become available to remote villages, the cost for service is prohibitive for much of KNOM's listeners. Radio remains an important source for faith, inspiration, news and education. For those who do have access, KNOM's website hosts many of the mission's productions, including Rosary prayers, inspirational spots, news, features and much more. Unlike most media websites, KNOM's webpages are free of advertisements, thanks to the generosity of thousands of generous private benefactors. KNOM has calculated, despite short staffing in FY 20, that nearly $62,257 of expenses are saved because these services are performed by an FTE equivalent staff of 2.5 contracted volunteers (net after stipends, living allowances, insurance & fellowships). This amount is not included as either income or expense.
As COVID 19 infiltrated Alaska and required a response to protect the State's residents, KNOM worked in concert with state and local leaders to keep listeners up to date with pertinent information, including regional and village travel restrictions, closures, quarantine requirements, testing options, prevention techniques and traditional healing methods. The remoteness of KNOM's broadcast region helped contact tracing in the relatively closed community systems. When the State initially hunkered down in early spring, listeners turned to KNOM for the latest available disease and response information. This service to community will continue through FY 21 and as long as necessary.
KNOM has formed many regional partnerships that benefit from the station's broadcast product. A trade-out agreement with a local airline to provide news and features coverage of events outside the City of Nome. In FY 20, the savings were substantial ($7,301), despite having few volunteers (1/2 budgeted volunteer staff) to travel. With greater staffing in previous years, the grand total for trade-out airline tickets for five fiscal years is $54,376.
