The 8th annual Let Every Woman Know-Alaska GYN Cancer Awareness and Arts of Healing weekend took place January 31st - February 2nd, 2020. The Welcome Reception and Last Friday Art Showcase at Georgia Blue Gallery kicked off the weekend with food, drinks and fantastic art donated by Alaskan artists to support LEWK. On Saturday and Sunday, we had max capacity at a free Cancer Course for both survivors and the medical community, while the Dance Like Barb Rhythm Heals Benefit Concert on Saturday night was a showstopper with dance performances by Underground Dance Company and the Tap Studio, featured vintage soul Motown band Joshy Soul & The Cool and local band H3. Attendees flew in from all over the state (and even a few from out of state) to be a part of this special weekend. Over $80,000 was raised to further LEWK's mission of gynecologic cancer awareness, education, and support in Alaska. Thank you to our generous sponsors, all who attended and our amazing volunteers!
The 13th annual Alyeska Climbathon went virtual and took place from September 1st - 12th, 2020. 223 dedicated climbers hit the mountain! A heartfelt thank you to our event partner Alyeska Resort, event sponsors: Advanced Oncology Associates, Alaska Cyberknife Center, Dimond Vision Clinic and Chugach Chocolates, all of the climbers and generous donors who helped raise $33 thousand dollars. 100% of funds stay in the state of Alaska with 25% going to the Girdwood Health Clinic and 75% to Let Every Woman Know-Alaska to further our mission of gynecologic cancer awareness and support for Alaskan women and families faced with a GYN cancer diagnosis.
The EXTRA-TOUGHS is an exciting program founded by Let Every Woman Know Alaska to provide an integrative team approach to sustainable weight loss, healthy lifestyle, and survivorship for gynecologic cancer and breast cancer survivors. This group is limited to women who fit the following criteria: 1.) Diagnosed with a breast and or gynecologic cancer. 2.) Completed primary treatment (i.e. surgery, chemo, radiation) 3.) Body Mass Index (BMI) = 30. This program includes custom designed group fitness exercise three-times a week; weekly support groups with fellow EXTRA-TOUGHS to address successes and challenges together and weekly nutrition classes to learn healthy eating habits. In 2020, the EXTRA-TOUGHS Anchorage program had four 12-week cycles with a total of 3 new starts to the program and 48 returning women. Generous grant funding from the State allowed Let Every Woman Know - Alaska to expand the EXTRA-TOUGHS program to the Mat-Su Valley for one year from June 2019 - June 2020. There were two 12-week cohorts in 2020 with a total of 1 new start and 5 returning women.
