Provides educational opportunities and programs to the Alviso Community including but not limited to student scholarships, educational community programs, a summer reading program for children at the Alviso Library and a free summer swimming program for Alviso children. SVAF brings Santa to the children of Alviso each December with a Christmas program including a vendor fair, meeting Santa Claus to receive a gift and a photograph with Santa, including their family and finally a free lunch. This Christmas program has been going on since 1983 in Alviso.
SVAF Scholarship Program granted scholarships to 25 students who are attending various Colleges and Vocational schools in 2020. Funds paid for; tuition, books, fees and other related educational expenses. The grant is paid in two installments, the initial payment at the beginning of the school year and the second payment mid-year after reviewing students progress. Applicants for a grant must complete an application, obtain two reference letters, complete an essay on their educational goals and be interviewed by the SVAF Board who make the final decision on granting the Scholarship. The Program does not look for the student with the highest grades but rather all students looking for an opportunity to improve themselves.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic in was necessary to make a change to the 2020 Christmas Program. Normally gifts are given to children, family photos are taken with Santa Claus and a free lunch is served. This year a $50 gift card was given to all families with children who attend the George Mayne Elementary School in Alviso. With the help of the staff from George Mayne a drive-buy was organized for families to receive the gift card. Over 355 gift cards were handed out to families by Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
With Covid rules in place this year free swimming was prevented but swim lessons took place with limited class sizes. The ANT Swim School, supported by SVAF, was able to provide lessons for Alviso children at the Alviso Community Pool.
