GOALS ACADEMY IS A TK THROUGH 6TH GRADE FREE PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL APPROVED BY THE ANAHEIM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT,SUPPORTED PRIMARILY BY STATE GRANTS AND IS OPERATING INDEPENDENTLY BUT UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH ATHLETICS LEARNING AND SERVICES (GOALS). GOALS ACADEMY OFFERS A RIGOUOUS ACADEMIC PROGRAM BUT ALSO FOCUSES ON DISCOVERING THE SCHOLAR'S INTERESTS AND TALENTS AND CONVERTING THEM INTO STRENGTHS. GOALS ACADEMY IS COMMITTED TO STAYING SMALL SO TO PROVIDE PERSONAL MENTORING AND HAS A DIVERSE STUDENT BODY LIMITED TO 240 STUDENTS.GOALS ACADEMY ADDITIONALLY OFFERS FEE BASED AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS INCLUDING VISUAL AND PERFORNING ARTS, STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS), LIFE SKILLS AND HOMEWORK SUPPORT.

GOALS OPERATES OVER 20 ENRICHMENT AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AGES 6 TO 19 YEARS OF AGE. ALL PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE IN SPECIFICALLY TARGETED DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES. THE PROGRAMS OPERATE UNDER THREE FUNDAMENTAL THEMES OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT IN ATHLETICS, LEARNING ENRICHMENT AND COMMUNITY SERVICE TO HELP OTHERS.A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF MAJOR GOALS PROGRAMS OPERATIVE DURING FY 2019-20 (YE 9/31/20)GOALS FOR VALADEZ: THIS REPRESENTS A DAILY AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM BASED AT THE VALADEZ MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PLACENTIA, CA. THE GOALS PROGRAM OPERATES IN PARTNERSHIP AND UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE PLACENTIA YORBA LINDA SCHOOL DISTRICT. THIS PROGRAM OPERATES MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY THOUGH WAS SUSPENDED DUE TO THE COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS IN EARLY MARCH OF 2020. WE MAINTAINED A DISTANCE LEARNING MODULE TO SUPPORT OUR PARTICIPANTS THROUGH THE END OF JUNE 2020 AND RESUMED THAT PROGRAM (DISTANCE LEARNING) IN LATE AUGUST OF 2020. PARTICIPATION DAILY AVERAGED ABOUT 105 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH AN OVERALL PROGRAM PARTICIPATION OF ABOUT 175 DURING THE COURSE OF THIS FISCAL YEAR.GOALS FOR GOALS ACADEMY. AS WITH THE VALADEZ PROGRAM, GOALS PROVIDED DAILY ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES AND SUPERVISION INCLUDING WEEKLY FIELD TRIPS TO VARIOUS DESTINATIONS SUCH AS ANAHEIM ICE FOR GOALS HOCKEY. ALSO, AS WITH VALADEZ, SUSPENSION OF IN-PERSON OVERSIGHT WAS INSTITUTED WITH STATEWIDE AND LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT SUSPENSION OF IN-PERSON LEARNING. GOALS IMMEDIATELY INSTITUTED ON-LINE "VIRTUAL LEARNING AND ENRICHMENT" COMMENCING IN MARCH OF 2020 AND SUSTAINED THIS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER AND EXPANDED THIS WITH ACTUAL ON-SITE "DISTANCE LEARNING" IN AT THE GOALS ACADEMY (NOW RENAMED VIRTUAL MINDS CHARTER SCHOOL) COMMENCING IN LATE AUGUST OF 2020. ANNUAL PARTICIPATION IS 100.GOALS FOR OAK VIEW. VERY MUCH LIKE THE TWO MAJOR SITES ABOVE, GOALS OPERATED A MAJOR MONDAY FRIDAY AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM AT THE OAK VIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH. THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN OPERATED FOR MANY YEARS IN PARTNERSHIP AND UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT. IN ADDITION, GOALS OPERATED A "MID-DAY" HEALTH AND FITNESS COMPONENT WHICH INVOLVED LARGE NUMBERS OF YOUNGSTERS TO ENCOURAGE ACTIVITIES IN SUPPORT OF PHYSICAL FITNESS. ALSO, DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THOSE ON-SITE/IN-PERSON PROGRAMS WERE PLACED ON HIATUS AND VIRTUAL PROGRAMS WERE OFFERED FOR DAILY PARTICIPATION THROUGHOUT THE BALANCE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. COMMENCING IN SEPTEMBER OF 2020 WE LAUNCHED A HYBRID MODEL OF IN-PERSON ENRICHMENT AFTERSCHOOL ALONG WITH SOME ON-LINE "VIRTUAL" OUTREACH AS WELL.GOALS FOR ABC (A BETTER COMMUNITY). THE GOALS ABC INITIATIVE WAS FULLY COMPLETED IN TERMS OF PHYSICAL RESTORATION IN THE WEST ANAHEIM COMMUNITY THAT HAS LONG SUFFERED FROM PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL DESTRUCTION. GOALS RESTORED AN ABANDONED CLUBHOUSE AND SURROUNDING ACREAGE BY DEVELOPING A HOST OF ATHLETIC FACILITIES INCLUDING AN ANAHEIM DUCKS SMALL SPORTS RINK. THAT WAS A MAJOR $100,000 IN-KIND CONSTRUCTION PROJECT THAT COMPLEMENTED THE GOALS DEVELOPMENT OF THE CLUBHOUSE, COMMUNITY GARDEN, HANDBALL WALL, TETHER BALL COURT, YOUTH SIZED TENNIS COURT, ABC AMPHITHEATRE/STAGE ZONE AND A GENERAL PLAY AREA. GOALS INSTITUTED DAILY TUTORING AND HOMEWORK HELP, DROP IN SPORTS AND WEEKLY FIELD TRIPS TOO! MORE THAN 150 COMMUNITY YOUNGSTERS PARTICIPATED IN THE GOALS ABC LEARNING AND ATHLETIC PROGRAMS DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR. GOALS HAD TO SUSPEND ALL USE DURING THE COVID-19 PERIOD THOUGH WE REMAINED AN ACTIVE MAINTENANCE AND SUPERVISION PRESENCE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER. IN SEPTEMBER WE ROLLED OUT A PLAN TO COMMENCE LIMITED OUTDOOR SUPERVISED ACTIVITIES FOR AFTERNOON HOURS.MULTIPLE OTHER GOALS COMMUNITY SITES WHERE GOALS OFFERED ONCE A WEEK "GOALS CLASSES AND FREE WEEKLY TRIPS TO GOALS FACILITIES SUCH AS THE CENTRAL "DREAMSCAPE" CENTER OR ANAHEIM ICE WERE OPERATED THROUGHOUT THE FISCAL YEAR AS WELL UP TO THE MARCH COVID-19 INTERRUPTION. THESE INCLUDED GOALS LOCATIONS AT RIO VISTA ELEMENTARY, MELROSE ELEMENTARY, RUBY DRIVE ELEMENTARY, AND MAXWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. COMBINED MORE THAN 200 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN THESE SITE AND FIELD TRIP PROGRAMS FOR THOSE PARTNERING LOCATIONS.GOALS EVERYBODY COUNTS EXPANDED PARTICIPATION AND PROGRAM OFFERINGS THROUGHOUT THE OCTOBER 2019 TO MARCH 2020 PERIOD. THIS UNIQUE PART OF GOALS FEATURES A WONDERFUL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEARBY NOT FOR PROFIT "MY DAY COUNTS" PROGRAM WHICH FOCUSES ON ENRICHMENT AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE WITH "DIFFERENT ABILITIES" (ONCE REFERRED TO ERRONEOUSLY AS DISABILITIES!). GOALS OPERATED THERAPEUTIC RECREATION PROGRAMS, ART PROGRAMS AND GARDENING PROGRAMS WHILE INTEGRATING SOME SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STAFF, AMERICORPS VOLUNTEERS AND PROGRAM INTERNS. SOME 150 PARTICIPANTS WERE INVOLVED UP UNTIL MARCH OF '20 WHEREUPON GOALS ALSO CONTINUED AN ART AND READING COMPONENT ON A VIRTUAL (ZOOM) BASIS.GOALS CADETS & THE SUMMER OF SERVICE. TYPICALLY, GOALS OPERATES A MAJOR REGIONAL SERVICE PROGRAM THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER MONTHS WHICH INCLUDES GOALS PARTICIPANTS FROM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AGE UP THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE AGES. THE PROGRAM FEATURES THE INCLUSION OF "SUMMER ASSOCIATES" SUPPORTED BY THE AMERICORPS VISTA NATIONAL SERVICE PROGRAM. TYPICALLY, GOALS OPERATES AND SUPPORTS VARIOUS PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS ALONG WITH SOCIAL SERVICE TO HELP OTHER NEEDY POPULATIONS. DURING THE SUMMER OF '20 WE CONDUCTED ALL PHYSICAL SERVICE PROJECTS AND RESTRICTED THE PARTICIPATION TO "ONLY" 70 ADULTS ON 7 SERVICE TEAMS EACH DEDICATED TO IMPROVING OR ADDRESSING DEFERRED MAINTENANCE NEEDS AT PRIMARILY PUBLIC SECTOR OR OTHER NOT FOR PROFIT FACILITIES. WE DEPLOYED 40 AMERICORPS VISTA SUMMER ASSOCIATES, A DOZEN SENIOR GOALS COACHES AS LEADERS, AND 18 SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLERS (PRIMARILY FROM VALENCIA HIGH SCHOOLS VAL-TECH PROGRAM) IN SUPPORT OF THESE REGIONAL PROJECTS. GOALS FOR VALCREST: ONE OF THESE MAJOR NEW SERVICE INITIATIVES IS WORTH OF HIGHLIGHTING FURTHER - AS IT IS THE LEADING EDGE SO TO SPEAK OF AN EXPANSION ENDEAVOR CALLED "GOALS FOR VALCREST". GOALS IS PARTNERING WITH THE USDA/FOREST SERVICE AND THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES RECREATION AND PARKS AGENCY TO RESTORE AND THEN EVENTUALLY REOPEN A LONG DORMANT MOUNTAIN CAMP IN THE ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST. CAMP VALCREST WAS ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED DURING A 10 YEAR PERIOD FROM THE LATE 1940'S THROUGH THE 1950'S AS ONE OF MANY ORGANIZATION" CAMPS SANCTIONED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. THE IDEA WAS TO PROVIDE A FOREST EXPERIENCE FOR URBAN YOUTH WHO MIGHT OTHERWISE NEVER HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO APPRECIATE SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY. GOALS HAS PLEDGED TO ASSUME THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR RETURNING THIS HISTORIC SITE TO FUNCTIONING AND TO PROVIDE ALL CAMP SPOTS AT NO CHARGE TO LOW INCOME CHILDREN. THE HOPE IS TO EXPAND PAST THE 2020 SUMMER EXPEDITIONS WE SPONSORED (10 IN TOTAL) WHICH FEATURED A SMALL GOALS SERVICE CREW AND ABOUT 20 DAYS IN TOTAL OF INITIAL FACILITY REPAIR AND PRESERVATION ACTIVITIES.GOALS ATHLETICS, FACILITIES, BUS SERVICES AND ICE HOCKEY: GOALS CONTINUES TO OPERATE MANY FACILITIES ACROSS SEVERAL CITY BLOCKS IN ANAHEIM, THE ABC SITE IN WEST ANAHEIM, AND OF COURSE THE MAJOR ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM ACTIVITIES DAILY AT ANAHEIM ICE WHICH IS ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTH OF THE CENTRAL GOALSCOMPLEX OF OUR HEADQUARTERS, OUTDOOR GARDENS, RINKS, TENNIS, SOCCER AND BASKETBALL FACILITIES. GOALS ALSO HAS MAINTAINED A BUS FLEET OF 4 BUSES AND IS SANCTIONED AS A BUS 'TERMINAL" WITH ANNUAL OVERSIGHT BY THE CA HIGHWAY PATROL. AS WITH ALL OTHER PROGRAM ASPECTS, FULL USE WAS CURTAILED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC LARGELY FROM MARCH THROUGH EARLY SEPTEMBER. SOME LIMITED USE HAS BEEN PHASED IN SLOWLY PER STATE AND CDC GUIDELINES AS THEY HAVE BEEN INSTITUTED AND PERIODICALLY MODIFIED.
