Organizations Filed Purposes:
To collect, preserve and promote the culture and history of Santa Catalina Island and to bring unique exhibitions to Catalina.
The Museum maintains a vibrant rotating exhibition schedule of at least four art and historical exhibitions. Additionally, the Museum presents a rotating contemporary sculpture program celebrating the work of Southern California artists. A large gallery permanently devoted to Catalina Island history is refreshed regularly to reflect the extraordinary history of Catalina Island. Tours of the museum's exhibitions and sites in our city of Avalon are conducted regularly. The museum's collection of over 160,000 historical items and artworks made on Catalina are collected, preserved and exhibited and are accessible to researchers.
Educational public programs and events assist in creating a positive and educational bond between the museum and its visitors. By attending monthly First Friday programs, attendees gain knowledge in the history of Catalina Island and are immersed in dynamic art, music, culinary, dance and a wide-variety of cultural experiences. An annual celebration of the art of silent film has been in place for 32 years; film is also celebrated throughout the summer in the Museum's outdoor amphitheater. The Museum also offers tours of the historic Tuna Club, the home of big-game sports fishing, and an impressive roster of former members.
The store at the Catalina Island Museum is stocked with custom items created from images from the Museum's archive and are sold alongside original artworks and items reflecting Catalina Island's natural environment, history and temporary exhibitions. Numerous reference books are available for visitors to learn more. Our Visitors Services Associate assist with sales of items, educating visitors about the Museum's offerings and orientating visitors within the Museum.
