THE PURPOSE OF THE 19-20 TITLE IV-E CALSWEC GRANT IS "WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT," I.E. TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE WORKFORCE BY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF MASTER'S-PREPARED SOCIAL WORKERS WHO ARE WORKING IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE. TOWARD THAT END, IN MAY 2020, WE GRADUATED 13 MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS WHO WERE NOT ALREADY WORKING IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE, AND THEIR AGREEMENT REQUIRES THEM TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE OR PAY BACK THE MONEY RECEIVED. ADDITIONALLY, WE GRADUATED FOUR STUDENTS WHO ARE ALREADY WORKING IN CHILD WELFARE, AND THEIR AGREEMENT REQUIRES THEM TO CONTINUE WORKING IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE OR PAY BACK THE MONEY RECEIVED. THESE NUMBERS DO NOT REFLECT THE 23 STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM WHO ARE EXPECTED TO GRADUATE IN 2021 OR 2022.HISTORICAL PATTERNS INDICATE THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL, OF THESE GRADUATES WILL FULFILL THEIR EMPLOYMENT OBLIGATIONS, THEREBY IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THE PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE WORKFORCE.

THE CITIZEN SCIENTIST PROJECT AT CSU BAKERSFIELD BUILDS THE CAPACITY OF K-12 TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO APPLY THEIR BUDDING COMPUTER SCIENCE, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING, AND MATH (C-STEM) COMPETENCIES TO IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS ISSUES OF COMMUNITY CONCERN IN COLLABORATION WITH SCIENTISTS AND COMMUNITY AGENCIES. TO BUILD CAPACITY FOR THIS WAY OF CONCEPTUALIZING, CREATING, AND FACILITATING C-STEM CURRICULA AND PEDAGOGY, WE CULTIVATE PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. TOWARDS THESE GOALS, DURING THE 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR, THE CITIZEN SCIENTIST PROJECT, IN COLLABORATION WITH TEACHING WORKS, BROUGHT TOGETHER 84 TEACHER EDUCATORS, MENTOR TEACHERS, AND RESIDENTS FROM THREE DISTRICT-FUNDED RESIDENCY PROGRAMS. TO BEGIN ESTABLISHING A COMMON LANGUAGE AND SET OF PRACTICES REGARDING WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE, SOUNDS LIKE, AND FEELS LIKE TO PREPARE TEACHERS TO LEAD A GROUP DISCUSSION ABOUT AIR POLLUTION IN KERN COUNTY WITHIN THEIR CLASSROOM CONTEXTS. TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT THIS WORK LOOKS LIKE WITH STUDENTS, THE CITIZEN SCIENTIST PROJECT ALSO PILOTED A GIRLS IN ROBOTICS LEADERSHIP (GIRL) CAMP, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UC DAVIS C-STEM CENTER, FOR HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS IN KERN COUNTY. DURING THE CAMP, RESIDENTS, TEACHER EDUCATORS, AND MENTOR TEACHERS FACILITATED A WEEK-LONG EXPERIENCE IN WHICH PARTICIPANTS LEARNED TO CODE, APPLY CODING TO ROBOTS, AND CREATE A VIDEO WITH THE ROBOTS TO TELL THE STORY OF A COMMUNITY ISSUE AND THEIR SOLUTION TO IT. IN ADDITION TO THESE SPACES OF INNOVATION, THE CITIZEN SCIENTIST PROJECT HAS LAID THE GROUNDWORK FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTRODUCTORY SUPPLEMENTAL AUTHORIZATION FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR K-9 TEACHERS, BECAME CERTIFIED TO CERTIFY TEACHER CANDIDATES IN PROJECT LEAD THE WAY K-5 LAUNCH, AND DEVELOPED A PARTNERSHIP WITH NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY TO DEVELOP CITIZEN SCIENCE TEACHING RESOURCES TO BE MADE AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
