Organizations Filed Purposes: To provide members over age 50 with the resources, referrals and services they need to remain independent and active in their communities.

Recent organizational accomplishments include expanding our service area, playing a leadership role in planning for aging services locally and state-wide, and quickly pivoting to provide services and a sense of community to our Village family and beyond during Covid-19. During the swift and highly successful response to the realities of Covid-19, Ashby Village has not only maintained but also enhanced services. These range from shopping for isolating members to putting all group meetings online and making many of them open to a much broader public, as well, through our YouTube channel. In this period, volunteer service hours increased by 15%, from 13,000 in 2019 to over 15,000 in 2020, equivalent to 7 full time staff. In 2020, Ashby Village added the City of Richmond to our service area and merged with North Oakland Village. Over the past several years, we are proud to have played a leading role in creating the Age-Friendly Berkeley Action Plan, while North Oakland Village has played a similar role in developing the Age-Friendly Oakland plan. In addition, Ashby Village serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Berkeley Age-Friendly Continuum, raising $800,000 in support over a 4 years period from Kaiser Permanente, Alta Bates/Summit Medical Center and other foundations. Adding Richmond and Oakland as service areas has set Ashby Village anew on a journey of purposeful change. We are actively working to align the organization with the current times and intensity of social disruptionthe response to the Covid-19 pandemic, intensified awareness of systemic racism and violence and growing economic disparities.

The Berkeley Continuum seeks to implement an integrated and replicable continuum of services and supports for older adults and people with disabilities. Its primary prevention/intervention program is called Gateway. During Covid-19, Gateway is providing social calling and referrals to resources to reduce isolation, support mental health, and assure access to necessities while sheltering in place. In addition to the calls, the Gateway newsletter has expanded its reach and there is now a virtual exercise class, both helping the program to reach more people. A partnership with DayBreak in Oakland again expanded the reach of the program to more people. As the pandemic lifts, planning for healthy/mentally healthy aging with home visits will resume in hybrid fashion with social calling. Informed by what we have learned during the pandemic, a major focus of that longer-term planning will be mental health and social connectedness supporting participants to assess whether they need to live in more social environments and/or how to become more socially active in order to maintain their mental health.

Ashby Village serves as fiscal sponsor for Berkeley Home Match, a program that connects UC Berkeley retiree homeowners with a spare bedroom to UC Berkeley graduate students, Postdocs, and Visiting Scholars looking for affordable housing. In its first year of operation, Berkeley Home Match created 10 affordable home matches between students and retirees. Students paid about 45% below the average for a room in a Berkeley home, while homeowners passively earned almost $1,000 per month on average. Work intended for 2020 was to establish an Outreach and Educational Program, to serve as a trusted source of accurate home sharing information and a support network for retirees interested in renting to UC students. With the pandemic and corresponding Shelter in Place, Berkeley Home Match temporarily paused its activities and seeks to resume shortly.
