Organizations Filed Purposes:
Berkeley Humane serves the people and animals of our community by providing life-saving programs for cats and dogs, cultivating compassion, and strengthening the human-animal bond.
BEBHS is committed to helping homeless animals within its service area. It relies on its veterinary hospital and shelter to provide medical attention and shelter to its residents until they are adopted.
ADOPTION The primary purpose of Berkeley Humane is to shelter homeless companion animals until they are placed in suitable homes, and to educate the public about the ramifications and responsibilities of pet ownership. There were fewer adoptions in 2020, due to the COVID shutdowns, but 703 dogs and cats found new homes and 1,084 were fostered by our volunteers. Our animals came from 13 municipal shelters and 6 private organization in Alameda, Contra Cost, Marin, San Joaquin, Solano and other counties. Our dogs and cats found new homes across 72 cities and 16 counties.
VETERINARY HOSPITAL Berkeley Humane's Veterinary Hospital performed over 3,000 exams, vaccinations and surgeries in 2020 for our shelter animals. The Hospital also provided 788 low cost spay/neuter surgeries to the public through our Spay the Bay Clinic, in addition to 644 microchips and 561 vaccinations.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING Berkeley Humane provides owner education seminars and dog training classes (including training for juvenile and difficult to handle dogs), reducing the potential that dogs will be rejected from homes and returned to a shelter or rescue. We provide special behavioral training classes and private consults for dogs that exhibit reactive and/or aggressive behavior, assisting owners in both the effective and safe management of them as well as techniques to change those behaviors. Due to COVID, in 2020, we were able to offer classes online only, and 457 dog owners enrolled in 140 training classes. Our behavior advice line provided telephone and email assistance to 427 animal owners.
