To inspire and empower an extraordinary public education for every child: the Schools Fund contributes to a high quality public education for students in Berkeley's Pre K-12TH grade public schools through direct grants, volunteers and community partnerships.
The Berkeley Public Schools Funds largest program expenditure is for grants to support teaching and student learning in Berkeleys 19 public schools, serving over 9,500 students. The Schools Fund awards grants for over 400 projects and activities providing academic support and enrichment. During the pandemic, the Schools Fund removed obstacles to distance learning by distributing computers and other essential supplies and assisting families with basic needs through financial support and volunteers. This focus on students and families using an equity lens, will continue beyond the pandemic.
The Schools Fund provides fiscal sponsorship services including management, administrative and advisory services for special funds established by individuals or businesses and held by the Schools Fund to be used for specific programs. Funds support large projects, such as a partnership with Bayer Healthcare for K-8 Science education; student scholarships, community-sponsored school projects and capital campaigns.
The Berkeley Public Schools Fund manages Berkeley Schools Volunteers, the largest volunteer program in the Berkeley schools. The program recruits, trains and places several hundred community members each year in classrooms, libraries, gardens, playgrounds and afterschool programs to support teachers, staff and students. During the pandemic, the volunteer program more than tripled in size, engaging community members in a range of services including tech support, food delivery, translation and mentoring. This expanded role of Berkeley Schools Volunteers will continue after the pandemic. The Schools Fund is responsible for fingerprinting volunteers. Revenue from these services is listed above.
