THE FREIGHT & SALVAGE IS A NONPROFIT COMMUNITY ARTS ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING PUBLIC AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC - MUSIC THAT IS ROOTED IN AND EXPRESSIVE OF THE GREAT VARIETY OF REGIONAL, ETHNIC, AND SOCIAL CULTURES OF PEOPLES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
THE FREIGHT AND SALVAGE PROMOTES PUBLIC AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC.
IN 2019, THE ORGANIZATION STAGED APPROXIMATELY 340 TICKETED CONCERTS FEATURING APPROXIMATELY 1,400 PERFORMERS OF TRADITIONAL AND FOLK MUSIC, ATTENDED BY NEARLY 90,000 PEOPLE, OF WHICH AT LEAST 10% RECEIVE FREE ADMISSION THROUGH A VARIETY OF OUTREACH PROGRAMS. THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTS A FREE OUTDOOR CONCERT EVERY YEAR, REACHING APPROXIMATELY 5,000 PEOPLE.
THE FREIGHT'S NEWLY EXPANDED EDUCATION DEPARTMENT EXTENDS OUR INCLUSIVE MISSION WITH A WIDE ARRAY OF PROGRAMMING WHICH REACHES THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS A YEAR. OUR BRAND NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAM, PLAYING WITH TRADITION, ILLUMINATES THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT, CULTURAL ROOTS, AND EXPRESSIVE POWER OF VARYING MUSICAL TRADITIONS AND GIVES STUDENTS A CHANCE TO JUMP START THEIR CREATIVITY WITH NEWLY ACQUIRED MUSICAL SKILLS. OUR LONG-RUNNING EVENING AND WEEKEND CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND JAMS CONTINUE TO BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE BAY AREA'S VIBRANT MUSIC SCENE. MORE RECENT OFFERINGS LIKE THE FREIGHT SINGERS COMMUNITY CHORUS ARE GROWING EVERY YEAR, AND OUR FIDDLE KIDS SUMMER CAMP HAS COMPLETED ITS 21ST SEASON. WE ALSO RECENTLY ADDED A PRE-SHOW CONVERSATION SERIES FEATURING EXCLUSIVE AND INSIGHTFUL INTERVIEWS WITH HEADLINING ARTISTS, RIGHT ON OUR STAGE. OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMMING EMBRACES EVERYTHING FROM FOLK AND JAZZ TO HIP-HOP, SOUTH INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC, AND BEYOND. IN THE MIDST OF THE 2020 WE SUCCESSFULLY PIVOTED INTO THE ONLINE SPHERE AND BROUGHT ON NEW TEACHERS TO EXPAND OUR REACH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.
THE ORGANIZATION HAS MANY COMMUNITY PARTNERS, INCLUDING THE BERKELEY OLD-TIME MUSIC CONVENTION, LOCAL SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAMS, SINGLE-DAY MUSIC FESTIVALS, A VARIETY OF LOCAL NON-PROFITS, AND AN ON-GOING COLLABORATION WITH OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE TO PRESENT A LECTURE SERIES FOR OLDER ADULTS.
