Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION IS TO ADVANCE THE TEACHING AND MODELING OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN K-12 SCHOOLS.

THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY BUILDS PARTNERSHIPS AND THE CAPACITY OF K-12 SCHOOLS TO SUPPORT HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL COMMUNITIES BY ADVANCING ECOLOGICAL LITERACY AND FOOD SYSTEMS CHANGE. IN 2019, WE PROVIDED TRAINING, ADVOCACY AND RESOURCES, AND SUPPORTED A NETWORK OF 89 PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT COLLECTIVELY SERVE OVER 330 MILLION MEALS A YEAR TO OVER 2 MILLION STUDENTS. OUR CALIFORNIA FOOD FOR CALIFORNIA KIDS CONFERENCE CONVENED OVER 120 FOOD SYSTEM LEADERS. WE SHIPPED 10,000 AWARD-WINNING EDUCATIONAL POSTERS TO SCHOOLS AND SHARED RESOURCES DIRECTLY WITH 5,200 PEOPLE WITH THE POTENTIAL TO REACH TENS OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS, AND WORKED WITH PARTNERS AT THE LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVEL TO ADVANCE POLICIES AND PRACTICES.IN 2019, THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY EXPANDED THE CALIFORNIA FOOD FOR CALIFORNIA KIDS INITIATIVE IN SUPPORT OF HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL COMMUNITIES. OUR 2019 CALIFORNIA FOOD FOR CALIFORNIA KIDS STATEWIDE CONFERENCE STRENGTHENED THE NETWORK BY BRINGING TOGETHER EDUCATORS AND FOOD SERVICE STAFF WITH ALLIED ORGANIZATIONS AND EXPERTS WHO COULD HELP ADVANCE THEIR WORK. OUR EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION LED TO SHINING EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS EXPERIENCING AND UNDERSTANDING THEIR ROLE IN THE FOOD SYSTEM WITHIN THE CAFETERIA, THE GARDEN, AND THE CLASSROOM AS WELL AS NEW EDUCATIONAL SPACES SUCH AS SUMMER MEAL SITES AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES. IN COLLABORATION WITH 89 PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT COLLECTIVELY SERVE A THIRD OF THE BILLION SCHOOL MEALS IN THE STATE, OUR DEEPENING ENGAGEMENT AND ADVOCACY EFFORTS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MODEL AND PROMOTE A MORE JUST, HEALTHY, AND SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL FOOD SYSTEM.WITH EXPANDED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING PRIORITIZED THIS YEAR, THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY CULTIVATED NEW RELATIONSHIPS, LAUNCHED NEW PROJECTS, AND ADVANCED TARGETED DISTRIBUTION AND DISSEMINATION OF OUR EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. TEN THOUSAND AWARD-WINNING EDUCATIONAL POSTERS WERE SHIPPED TO THE NETWORK AND ARE NOW PROUDLY DISPLAYED IN CAFETERIAS AND CLASSROOMS ACROSS THE STATE. A ROBUST SUMMER MEALS CAMPAIGN IN RIVERSIDE AND SACRAMENTO GENERATED OVER 13.4 MILLION IMPRESSIONS AND REACHED NEW FAMILIES. DISSEMINATION OF OUR EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO OVER 5,200 PEOPLE AT 42 IN-PERSON GATHERINGS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO REACH TENS OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS. THE DISSEMINATION OF THE NEW ABUNDANT CALIFORNIA RESOURCES HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE AT ENGAGING INFORMAL EDUCATORS, WITH PRESENTATIONS MADE TO OVER 50 LIBRARIES AND NEW PROGRAMS THAT FEATURE THE RESOURCES ALONGSIDE RECOMMENDED LIBRARY BOOKS ABOUT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY DESIGNED AND ADVANCED A HEALTHY SCHOOL FOOD POLICY FRAMEWORK IN COLLABORATION WITH THE OFFICE OF KAT TAYLOR, NEXTGEN POLICY, AND THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION THAT WAS WORKSHOPPED WITH 29 DIFFERENT STAKEHOLDER ORGANIZATIONS. WE CONDUCTED INTERVIEWS WITH CALIFORNIA FOOD SERVICE DIRECTORS WHO PROVIDED VALUABLE INSIGHTS ON HOW THE POLICY COULD BE DESIGNED FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS. LOOKING TOWARDS 2020, THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY DEVELOPED EDUCATIONAL CALIFORNIA FOOD FOR CALIFORNIA KIDS LEGISLATIVE REPORTS WITH PERSONALIZED INFORMATION AND DETAILED METRICS ABOUT FARM TO SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES AND THE IMPACTS WITHIN INDIVIDUAL LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA. AT OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY BUILT UPON A DECADE OF DEDICATED LEADERSHIP AND CONTINUED COLLABORATION WITH SENIOR MANAGEMENT TO PREPARE THE DISTRICT TO ACTIVATE THE CENTRAL KITCHEN, INSTRUCTIONAL FARM, AND EDUCATION CENTER AS IT APPROACHES LAUNCH AND IMPLEMENTATION.THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY SERVES AS AN ANCHOR TENANT AT THE DAVID BROWER CENTER, A HOME FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ACTION AND ONE OF THE BAY AREA'S MOST ADVANCED GREEN BUILDINGS. BEING LOCATED AT THE DAVID BROWER CENTER ENABLES US TO EXPAND OUR SERVICES WHILE PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION WITH DOZENS OF OTHER LEADING NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
