Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT IS TO ENABLE HANDS-ON FOOD EDUCATION, ANYWHERE CHILDREN GATHER TO LEARN

FY2020 MARKED THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT'S 5TH YEAR OF OPERATIONS; A JUMP TO 200 SITES; OUR FIRST USDA FARM TO SCHOOL GRANT; INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION OF OUR PROGRAM, AND A SHIFT IN FOCUS TO PEER-TO-PEER NETWORKING AND RELATED SUPPORT. WHILE EXPANSION IS IMPORTANT, OUR PRIMARY GOAL REMAINS TO CREATE LONG-TERM CHANGE BY EMPOWERING EDUCATORS WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUPPORT THEIR COMMUNITIES.TO DELIVER ON PEER-TO-PEER RESOURCE SHARING, CHARLIE CART DEVELOPED PLANS TO WORK REGIONALLY TO CONNECT SITES AND POTENTIAL PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS. STAKEHOLDER MEETINGS, REGIONAL TRAININGS AND NETWORKING EFFORTS LED TO COLLABORATION ACROSS VARIOUS ENTITIES, INCLUDING LIBRARIES AND FOOD BANKS; LIBRARIES AND LOCAL CHEFS; FOOD BANKS AND CLINICS; AND SCHOOLS AND LOCAL (AG) PRODUCERS. IN ADDITION, CHARLIE CART DRAFTED PLANS FOR A WEB-BASED FORUM WHERE EDUCATORS CAN CONNECT, SHARE INFORMATION, AND DOWNLOAD RECIPES AND LESSON PLANS. WHEN THE PANDEMIC REQUIRED ALL WORK TO MOVE ONLINE, CHARLIE CART STAFF DEVELOPED TRAINING AND SUPPORT MATERIALS TO BE DELIVERED VIRTUALLY. RELATED EXPENSES INCLUDE SALARY AND BENEFITS FOR PERSONNEL, EXPERT CONSULTANTS, WEBSITE UPGRADE AND SOFTWARE INTEGRATION, AND COMPUTER EQUIPMENT. REVENUE REFLECTS THE SALE OF 65 CARTS AND SEVERAL ON-SITE TRAININGS.

IN THE FIVE YEARS SINCE THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT (CCP) LAUNCHED, WE HAVE REACHED NEARLY 300,000 CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN 38 STATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. AT THE OUTSET OF FY2019, WITH A STAFF OF FIVE, A WELL-HONED MANUFACTURING SYSTEM, AND A CONSISTENTLY INCREASING CUSTOMER BASE, CCP WAS PREPARED FOR THE NEXT STAGE OF GROWTH. WHEN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES SHUT DOWN IN MARCH 2020, CCP WAS DECISIVE AND PROACTIVE. WE CONTINUED TRAINING NEW EDUCATORS ON-LINE AND CREATED A SET OF RESOURCES FOR HOME SCHOOLING PARENTS AND TEACHERS SEEKING HANDS-ON CONTENT TO LEVERAGE DURING SHELTER IN PLACE.DESPITE THE CHALLENGES, THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT CONTINUED TO EXPAND, ADDING 65 NEW PROGRAM SITES NATIONWIDE. WE IMMEDIATELY MOVED OUT OF OUR OFFICES, COMMUNICATED WITH OUR FUNDERS TO MODIFY GRANT FUNDED PROJECTS, AND LEVERAGED OUR MATERIALS AND EXPERTISE TO DELIVER RELEVANT, TIMELY RESOURCES TO THE CHARLIE CART NETWORK ON-LINE.TO DATE, THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT HAS TRAINED MORE THAN 800 EDUCATORS, SUPPORTING THEM WITH TOOLS AND CAPACITY TO DELIVER HANDS-ON COOKING LESSONS WITHIN THEIR ORGANIZATIONS. WE SUPPORT EACH PROGRAM SITE WITH CAPACITY BUILDING TO INTEGRATE COOKING AND NUTRITION OVER THE LONG TERM. AS SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES WERE SHUT DOWN ACROSS THE COUNTRY, IT BECAME PAINFULLY CLEAR THE CRITICAL ROLE THESE INSTITUTIONS HAVE IN REACHING AND FEEDING CHILDREN. THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT'S ON-GOING RELATIONSHIP TO OUR SITES, RURAL AND URBAN, HAS ENABLED US TO SUPPORT THEM WITH MEANINGFUL TOOLS AND CONNECTIONS TO HELP THEM THROUGH THIS CHALLENGE.RELATED EXPENSES INCLUDE STAFF SALARY AND BENEFITS; WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT; TRAINING MATERIALS; RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND PUBLICATION.
