The organization's mission is to produce free or low-cost literacy programming for Northern California residents.
The Bay Area Book Festival, the organization's primary program, was held on May 4 & 5, 2019. An estimated 25,000 people attended. More than 300 volunteers worked the weekend event. The Festival featured 250 authors from around the world in 100 indoor sessions held in 12 different venues as well as outdoor literature, children's and family stages. The City of Berkeley closed downtown streets and sidewalks to accommodate the multi-block outdoor portion of the event, which was free of charge. Attendees could reserve seating for the indoor venues for $10 per session or purchase general admission wristbands for $15 that allowed access to all of the indoor sessions. Most of the indoor sessions were full, and attendance was robust at the outdoor fair. The outdoor fair also featured 200 book and literary exhibitors, an interactive play and learning zone for families and children, in addition to a new food court in association with the nonprofit food business incubator La Cocina.
