Organizations Filed Purposes: SAGE's mission is to bring about a future where agriculture thrives at the urban edge, benefiting rural and urban communities alike, and where vibrant local food systems build health, equity, regional identity and resilience. Founded in 2001, SAGE is an entrepreneurial nonprofit working to revitalize sustainable urban-edge agriculture, support and diversify the sustainable farming population, incorporate food systems planning into local and regional planning frameworks, and connect diverse urban communities with the people and places that grow their food.

SAGE revitalizes agricultural places near cities and fosters vital food systems that connect urban and rural communities.

AGRICULTURE REVITALIZATION - This program addresses the unique importance of sustainable farming near cities. Urban-edge agricultural places sustain cities by providing fresh food grown by diverse farmers, ecosystems services, water and waste recycling efficiencies, and community engagement opportunities. They contain cities by creating urban-edge greenbelts and define cities by fostering dynamic agricultural traditions and sense of place. Work and services include: Place-based projects, food sheds and agricultural economic viability assessments, implementation and business plans, and tool kits and conceptual frameworks that support and promote sustainable food systems.

URBAN-RURAL CONNECTION: This program recognizes that urban communities and the rural areas at their edges must work together to create sustainable, resilient and equitable communities. Work and service include: - Food supply chain assessments liked with city planning, economic development and public health goals - Public engagement projects that celebrate local food culture and connect urban residents to nearby farms and the people who grow their food. PROJECTS: In the Bay Area's largest, most diverse city, we launched the Food Works: Assessing Local Food as a driver to make San Jose a healthier, more resilient place to live, to link public health, equitable economic development, place-making, smart growth and climate mitigation through local food. SAGE was recently selected to create a Vision for Local Food and Farm Bill for San Mateo county.
