Organizations Filed Purposes: Through the Looking Glass Mission is: To provide and encourage respectful and empowering servicesguided by personal disability experience and disability culture for families that have children, parents, or grandparents with disability or medical issues.

INTERVENTION AND CONSULTATION SERVICES:Through the Looking Glass provides support services to Alameda, Contra Costa County families with disability, medical, or developmental issues in infant, child, parent, or parenting grandparent. In 2019 318 families were served with weekly home visiting offering developmental, mental health, disability adaptations for parenting, family advocacy services. Also 1779 individuals were served in parent/child playgroups, parent support groups, mentoring groups for youth with disabilities, and mental health, developmental consultation to Oakland early childhood centers.

EARLY HEAD START PROGRAM:Through the Looking Glass inclusive Early Head Start program serves primarily low-income expectant parents and children birth to three years and their parents/caregivers, providing a model for serving families with and without disabilities in an Early Head Start Program that has a center and home-based services. Comprehensive services include early childhood education, socialization, child/parent mental health services, family resources and support. In the 2019-2020 enrollment year 115 children and pregnant women were served in 93 families.

Program Service AccomplishmentsIn addition to its local services, TLG continues to have a key role in national and international public policy efforts regarding parents with disabilities, providing consultation and training. TLG brought its expertise regarding parents with disabilities to an analysis of dependency system practice in another state. This included emphasizing the need for appropriate services for youth with disabilities transitioning from foster care and their children, a focus of TLG practice, funded by the Walter S. Johnson Foundation for several years. TLG helped develop Alameda Countys new Early Childhood Mental Health certification program at California State University East Bay, ensuring that disability issues were covered, and a TLG psychologist has been bringing this experience as one of three faculty for the certification program. An international award-winning South Korean internet newspaper group that has been conducting a series on experiences of parents with disabilities in South Korea spent approximately a week interviewing and filming TLG staff and families as part of their effort to improve resources and public policy for parents with disabilities in South Korea. UC Berkeleys Haas Institute proposed California state legislation to support parents with disabilities through new regional centers modeled on Through the Looking Glass.
