THE MISSION OF THE CALIFORNIA HEART CENTER FOUNDATION IS TO ADVANCE THE FIELD OF CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE THROUGH CLINICAL RESEARCH INITIATIVES AND EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES.
PROMOTE & DEVELOP EDUCATIONAL & SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TO ADVANCE THE FIELD OF CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE.
THE MISSION OF THE CALIFORNIA HEART CENTER FOUNDATION IS TO ADVANCE THE FIELD OF CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE THROUGH CLINICAL RESEARCH INITIATIVES AND EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES. OUR EFFORTS INCLUDE THE PURSUIT OF COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS WHICH PROMOTE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF DISEASE PROGRESSION AND TEST THE EFFICACY OF NEW STRATEGIES FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT. AREAS OF RESEARCH CURRENTLY BEING PURSUED INCLUDE NON-INVASIVE METHODS TO DETECT ORGAN REJECTION, NOVEL IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE AGENTS, IMMUNE MONITORING STRATEGIES, LONG-TERM COMPLICATIONS SUCH AS CARDIAC ALLOGRAFT VASCULOPATHY, (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)(CONTINUATION FROM FORM 990, PAGE 2)NOVEL METHODS FOR ORGAN PROCUREMENT AND PRESERVATION, NEW MECHANICAL CIRCULATORY SUPPORT DEVICES AND PULMONARY HYPERTENSION. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO SUPPORTS IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIA, WHICH ALLOW FOR THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AMONG LEADERS IN THE FIELD AND PROVIDE A FORUM FOR EXPERTS TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE WITH OTHER PRACTITIONERS. THE ORGANIZATION RESOURCES ARE ALSO LEVERAGED TO SUPPORT A SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WITH AN INTEREST IN MEDICINE AND/OR ACADEMIC RESEARCH. FOLLOWING IS A SUMMARY OF PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS IMPLEMENTED IN 2019: SCIENTIFIC FORUMS AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES:* "CUTTING EDGE OF TRANSPLANTATION (CEOT)" - FEBRUARY 21-23, 2019 (PHOENIX AZ)THIS CONFERENCE WAS ORGANIZED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TRANSPLANTATION, WITH CONTENT DEVELOPED AROUND THE THEMATIC FOCUS OF "NO SIZE FITS ALL: UNCOVERING THE POTENTIAL OF PERSONALIZED TRANSPLANTATION". DEDICATED HEART AND LUNG SESSIONS WERE DESIGNED, ORGANIZED AND CHAIRED BY DR. KOBASHIGAWA, WITH A FOCUS ON CUSTOMIZED IMMUNOSUPPRESSION AND BIOMARKERS FOR ORGAN REJECTION. DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR AN IN-DEPTH DISCUSSION AMONG THE LEADING EXPERTS IN THE FIELD, INCLUDING NEPHROLOGISTS, CARDIOLOGISTS, AND TRANSPLANT SURGEONS, THIS CONFERENCE SERVED AS A FIRST STEP IN DEVELOPING NEEDED GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERDISCIPLINARY CRITERIA FOR KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION IN THE COMBINED HEART/KIDNEY TRANSPLANT CANDIDATE, EVALUATE THE CURRENT ALLOCATION OF KIDNEYS TO FOLLOW THE HEART FOR THE HEART/KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT AND RECOMMEND STANDARDIZED CARE FOR THE COLLABORATIVE MANAGEMENT OF HEART/KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS. A CONSENSUS STATEMENT IS CURRENTLY BEING DRAFTED, WITH PUBLICATION EXPECTED BY THE END OF THIS CALENDAR YEAR.* CARDIAC AMYLOID CONSORTIA - INVESTIGATOR MEETINGS - MONDAY, MARCH 18TH, 2019 (NEW ORLEANS, LA) AND WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3RD, 2019 (ORLANDO, FL)TWO BRAINSTORMING MEETINGS REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A CONSORTIUM TO SUPPORT A MULTI-CENTER AMYLOID REGISTRY WERE HELD IN TANDEM WITH THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY AND INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF HEART & LUNG TRANSPLANTATION IN THE SPRING OF THIS YEAR. BOTH MEETINGS WERE ORGANIZED BY DR. JIGNESH PATEL AND SPONSORED BY DR. JON KOBASHIGAWA. HUNT HAS WITNESSED THE HISTORY OF HEART TRANSPLANT SURGERY FROM THE VERY FIRST ONE IN THE US BY NORMAN SHUMWAY IN 1968, THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL MORATORIUM ON HEART TRANSPLANTS AND THE RECENT DECADES OF COMBINED HEART-LUNG TRANSPLANTS AND MECHANICAL ASSIST DEVICES.
