PROVIDE FUNDS FOR MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, RESEARCH, PROGRAM SERVICES AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH, OPERATIONS AND BUILDING MAINTENANCE FOR THE JULES STEIN EYE INSTITUTE TO PRESERVE SIGHT AND PREVENT BLINDNESS.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH -THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES GOODWILL AND COMMUNITY INFORMATION FROM THE JULES STEIN EYE INSTITUTE THROUGH A SECTION OF THE QUARTERLY EYE MAGAZINE, INFORMATION IN THE ANNUAL REPORT, AND VARIOUS BROCHURES WHICH ARE SUBSIDIZED BY THE SUPPORT GROUP. IN ADDITION, THE SUPPORT GROUP UNDERWRITES THE MAKE SURGERY BEARABLE PROGRAM WHICH SPONSORED OVER 595 DR. TEDDY BEARS WHICH ARE DISTRIBUTED TO EACH PEDIATRIC PATIENT UNDERGOING EYE SURGERY. JSEI AFFILIATES VOLUNTEERS WORKED OVER 63 HOURS TO APPLY SPONSOR BOOKPLATES, TAG AND SORT THE DR. TEDDY BEARS. IN ADDITION, THE ILLUSTRATED "MAKING EYE SURGERY BEARABLE" CHILDREN'S BOOK WHICH WAS TRANSLATED INTO SPANISH IS DELIVERED TO EACH PEDIATRIC PATIENT IN EITHER ENGLISH OR SPANISH DEPENDING ON WHICH IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE PEDIATRIC PATIENT AND THEIR PARENTS. THE BOOK AND DR. TEDDY HELP ALLEVIATE FEARS AND CONCERNS FOR PEDIATRIC PATIENTS AND THEIR PARENTS BY ILLUSTRATING THE SURGICAL PROCESS PRIOR TO SURGERY. THE SUPPORT GROUP ALSO SUPPORTS THE PAID VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR POSITION, WHO COORDINATES THE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS. INCOME = $475 EXPENSE AND GRANTS = $94,254.

PRESCHOOL VISION SCREENING - 24 VOLUNTEERS ACCUMULATED OVER 300 HOURS SCREENING 27 CLASSROOMS WITH 730 CHILDREN AT PRESCHOOLS FREE OF CHARGE. VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE TRAINING ON THE RETINOMAX AUTO-REFRACTOR AND SUPPORT THE PREP WORK WHICH INCLUDES COMPLETING THE VISION SCREENING RESULT FORMS WITH THE STUDENT NAME, BIRTHDATE, GENDER, ETHNICITY AND LANGUAGE SPOKEN AT HOME. THE COMPREHENSIVE SCREENING PROCESS INCLUDES AN ACUITY TEST AND AUTO REFRACTIVE SCREENING UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEER OPTOMETRISTS. IN ADDITION, THE SCREENING PROCESS UTILIZES THE CANELLA SOFTWARE FOR THE VISUAL ACUITY PORTION OF EACH SCREENING TO INCREASE THE ACCURACY OF THE RESULTS. FOR THE YEAR, 55 STUDENTS WERE REFERRED TO A PHYSICIAN FOR FURTHER EXAMINATION.

VISION IN-SCHOOL - OVER 34 PRESENTATIONS WERE MADE TO APPROXIMATELY 1,082 STUDENTS BY 38 VOLUNTEERS ACCUMULATING OVER 325 HOURS. THE PROGRAM IS FOR 5TH GRADERS TO TEACH THEM EYE SAFETY AND HEALTH, AND INCLUDES THE DISSECTION OF A BOVINE EYE SO THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF THE EYE. THEY UTILIZED THE LAPTOP AND LCD PROJECTOR TO DISPLAY THE UPDATED VIS POWERPOINT PRESENTATION WITH NEW SLIDES, MAKING IT EASIER FOR THE STUDENTS TO SEE AND UNDERSTAND THE PRESENTATION SLIDES AND EASIER FOR THE VOLUNTEERS TO CUSTOMIZE THEIR PRESENTATION MATERIAL. IN ADDITION, A NEW "SEE" VIDEO WAS PRODUCED AND IS SHOWN AT THE CONCLUSION OF EACH VISION IN-SCHOOL PRESENTATION TO REINFORCE THE LESSONS OF EYE HEALTH AND EYE SAFETY. SHARED VISION PROGRAM - THE AFFILIATES HAVE A MAJOR EYEGLASS RECYCLING PROGRAM BENEFITING THOSE IN NEED. OVER 3,500 EYEGLASSES WERE COLLECTED FROM INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS, DONATION RECEPTACLES THROUGHOUT THE EYE INSTITUTE, SEVERAL YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS, AND THE UCLA CAMPUS POLICE FROM THEIR UNCLAIMED CAMPUS LOST AND FOUND COLLECTION. THE EYEGLASSES ARE DONATED TO HOMELESS SHELTERS AND LOCAL CLINICS INCLUDING UNION RESCUE MISSION IN LOS ANGELES, EYEGLASS FACTORY (FRAMES ONLY), UCLA MOBILE CLINIC PROJECT, AND THE LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL.LENDING LIBRARY - THE AFFILIATES SUPPORT THE EYE INSTITUTE LENDING LIBRARY FOR LOW-VISION PATIENTS BY DONATING NEW, TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED DEVICES. THE AFFILIATES CONTINUED THE LENDING PROGRAM FOR AMAZON ECHO DOT AND KINDLE FIRE DEVICES WHICH ALLOW THE PATIENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN HOW TO USE VOICE ACTIVATED ASSISTIVE DEVICES AND BORROW THEM FROM THE LIBRARY FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD OF TIME.
