PEN AMERICA LOS ANGELES SERVES WRITERS, TRANSLATORS, EDITORS, AGENTS, PUBLISHERS, BOOKSELLERS, TEACHERS, LIBRARIANS, AND READERS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WITH PROGRAMS, FELLOWSHIPS, EVENTS NEWS ON FREE EXPRESSION AND LITERARY ACTIVITIES.

PEN IN THE COMMUNITY (PITC): BRINGS PROFESSIONAL WRITERS INTO UNDERSERVED SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES IN TWO WAYS: THROUGH OUR WRITER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM AND THROUGH OUR GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAM. OVER 100 AUDIENCE MEMBERS, 125 WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS FROM SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY CENTERS LOCATED IN UNDERSERVED DISTRICTS OF LOS ANGELES, THREE INSTRUCTORS, AND FIVE GUEST SPEAKERS IN OUR PEN IN THE COMMUNITY WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCE & GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAM. PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS SPAN CULTURAL DIVERSITY, VARYING SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUSES, DISABILITIES, GENDER IDENTITIES, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, AND AGE. WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE 100 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND 25 MEN CURRENTLY INCARCERATED AT CALIFORNIA STATE PRISON, LOS ANGELES COUNTY. THESE POPULATIONS SPAN CULTURAL DIVERSITY, VARYING SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUSES, DISABILITIES, GENDER IDENTITIES, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, AND AGE.

EMERGING VOICES (EV): IS A LITERARY MENTORSHIP THAT AIMS TO PROVIDE NEW WRITERS WHO ARE ISOLATED FROM THE LITERARY ESTABLISHMENT WITH THE TOOLS, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE THEY NEED TO LAUNCH A PROFESSIONAL WRITING CAREER. THE 2018 APPLICATION CYCLE RESULTED IN 203 APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2019 EV FELLOWSHIP. 29.56% OF APPLICANTS APPLIED FOR CREATIVE NONFICTION, 51.72% APPLIED FOR FICTION, AND 18.72% APPLIED FOR POETRY. DEMOGRAPHIC BREAKDOWN 25-34 WAS THE MOST POPULAR AGE DEMOGRAPHIC IN THE APPLICANT POOL (36.45%). THE FOLLOWING AGE GROUP WAS 35-44 AT 26.11%. 12.81% OF APPLICANTS WERE 18-24. 10.84% OF APPLICANTS WERE 55-64. 10.34% OF APPLICANTS WERE 45-54. 3.45% OF APPLICANTS WERE 65 YEARS OLD OR OLDER. APPLICANTS WHO IDENTIFIED AS FEMALE DOMINATED THE APPLICANT POOL AT 71.43%. 22.66% OF APPLICANTS IDENTIFIED AS MALE. 5.91% IDENTIFIED AS "OTHER" (NON-BINARY, GENDERQUEER). THE MOST POPULAR RACE DEMOGRAPHIC WAS WHITE AT 33.99%. 15.76% OF APPLICANTS WERE ASIAN/ASIAN-AMERICAN, 19.21% WERE BLACK/ AFRICAN-AMERICAN. 11.33% OF APPLICANTS WERE HISPANIC OR LATINX. 0.99% OF APPLICANTS WERE NATIVE AMERICAN. 15.27% OF APPLICANTS IDENTIFIED AS "OTHER OR MIXED RACE. 3.45% PREFERRED NOT TO STATE A RACE.
