IN 2019, TOWER FUNDED THREE NEW CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FOR PROMISING YOUNG PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS AT CEDARS-SINAI MEDICAL CENTER AND UCLA AND INVESTED IN A START-UP BIOREPOSITORY PROJECT FOR WORLD RENOWNED ONCOLOGIST DR. BETH KARLIN. IN ADDITION, TOWER CONTINUED FUNDING ON SIX MULTI-YEAR SENIOR INVESTIGATOR GRANTS. TOTAL GRANT EXPENDITURES TOPPED $1,100,000. INVESTING IN NOVEL IDEAS OF YOUNG INVESTIGATORS ALLOWS US TO LEVERAGE OUR DONOR DOLLARS TO HAVE MAXIMUM IMPACT. IN 2019 ALONE, OUR PREVIOUS CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANTEES WENT ON TO EARN OVER $6.5 MILLION IN ADDITIONAL FUNDING FROM THE RESEARCH DATA CREATED UNDER OUR GRANT PROGRAM.TOWER'S MAGNOLIA HOUSE OFFERS FREE EVIDENCE BASED PSYCHOSOCIAL PATIENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF ONE'S QUALITY CANCER TREATMENT AND SURVIVORSHIP CARE. IN 2013, TOWER CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION'S MAGNOLIA PATIENT SUPPORT PROGRAM OFFERED 19 CLASSES PER MONTH AND HAD 500 VISITS IN THE FIRST YEAR. IN 2019, TOWER'S MAGNOLIA HOUSE PATIENT SUPPORT PROGRAM OFFERED OVER 120 CLASSES/SERVICES PER MONTH AND RECEIVED OVER 10,000 PARTICIPANT VISITS PER YEAR. OVER 50% OF OUR CLASSES HAD A WAIT LIST WHICH HIGHLIGHTS BOTH THE QUALITY IN THE PROGRAMS WE OFFER AND THE VOID THAT EXISTS. PARTICIPANTS VIEW MAGNOLIA HOUSE PATIENT SUPPORT PROGRAM AS A LIFELINE THAT PROVIDES NOT ONLY ENHANCED QUALITY OF LIFE BUT A COMMUNITY OF FRIENDSHIP, ENCOURAGEMENT, AND COMFORT AS WELL. TOWER'S COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GRANT REVIEW COMMITTEE IS COMPOSED OF EXPERT VOLUNTEERS WHO REVIEW APPLICATIONS IN DEPTH AND THEN MEET TO DISCUSS GRANT APPLICATIONS FROM CANCER SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. IN 2019, THERE WERE OVER 30 SUBMISSIONS AND THE FIELD WAS COMPETITIVE. AFTER RIGOROUS REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION FROM THE GRANT COMMITTEE, TOWER FUNDED $225,000 IN COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GRANTS WHICH INCLUDED: PROJECT ANGEL FOOD FOR FREE FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICE FOR CANCER PATIENTS IN LOS ANGELES, CAMP KESEM FOR KIDS EFFECTED BY A PARENT'S CANCER DIAGNOSIS; CITY OF HOPE TO DEVELOP A ROBUST ADOLESCENT AND YOUNG ADULT CANCER SUPPORT PROGRAM; JOHN WAYNE CANCER INSTITUTE TO DEVELOP A CAREGIVER EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM TO ADDRESS THE UNMET NEEDS OF CAREGIVERS; OUR HOUSE GRIEF SUPPORT CENTER TO EXPAND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO HAVE LOST A PARENT OR SIBLING; THE INSTITUTE FOR ARTS IN MEDICINE AT USC NORRIS COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER TO DEVELOP AN INTERDISCIPLINARY MODEL TO FACILITATE BETTER PATIENT CARE THROUGH ART THERAPIES, VIRTUAL REALITY, THE LAUGHMD APPLICATION, AND GUIDED IMAGERY ON HOSPITALIZED CANCER PATIENTS; AND THE BUMBLEBEE FOUNDATION FOR THE PATIENT AID PROGRAM TO FINANCIALLY ASSIST FAMILIES WHO HAVE A CHILD WITH CANCER.
