THE ORGANIZATION INSPIRES, ENGAGES AND SUPPORTS PEOPLE TO TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT MAKING IT SAFE, HEALTHY, FUN AND SUSTAINABLE AND TO SHARE THE PROCESS AS A MODEL FOR THE WORLD. TREEPEOPLE FACILITATES COLLABORATION AMONG PUBLIC AGENCIES AND BUSINESS, AND PROMOTES LEADERSHIP IN GRASSROOTS VOLUNTEERS, YOUTH AND COMMUNITIES. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: TREEPEOPLE'S ROBUST ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING SERVES K-12 YOUTH ACROSS LOS ANGELES COUNTY THROUGH HANDS-ON SCIENCE AND NATURE-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING. THE ECO-TOUR PROGRAM IS A UNIQUE FIELD TRIP WHERE STUDENTS EXPLORE TREEPEOPLE'S COLDWATER CANYON PARK GUIDED BY ECO-EDUCATORS THAT CONNECT THE CYCLES OF NATURE BACK TO A STUDENT'S OWN BACKYARD. TREEPEOPLE SERVED APPROXIMATELY 9,000 STUDENTS IN 2019 THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, THROUGH THE GENERATION EARTH PROGRAM TREEPEOPLE WORKED WITH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH TO CONDUCT ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS THAT FOCUSED ON WATER, WASTE, AND CAMPUS FORESTRY. THIS PROGRAM SERVED APPROXIMATELY 13,500 STUDENTS IN 2019 IN 140 SCHOOLS.
POLICY AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT: THE POLICY AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT COMPLETED THE LOS ANGELES URBAN COOLING COLLABORATIVE PROJECT, FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL URBAN AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY ADVISORY COUNCIL, IN 2019. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CENTER FOR URBAN RESILIENCE AT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY AND OTHER PARTNERS, WE PRODUCED THE FIRST EVER HIGH-RESOLUTION TREE CANOPY COVER ASSESSMENT (INCLUDING BOTH EXISTING AND POSSIBLE TREE COVER) DOWN TO THE PARCEL LEVEL FOR LOS ANGELES COUNTY. OUR TEAM CONTINUES TO EDUCATE POLICY-MAKERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF URBAN FORESTS, NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS, AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE FOR EXAMPLE, WE CO-ORGANIZED THE FIRST EVER ROOTED IN URBAN FORESTRY DAY IN THE LOS ANGELES CITY HALL.
URBAN AND MOUNTAIN FORESTRY PROGRAM: TREEPEOPLE'S URBAN AND MOUNTAIN FORESTRY PROGRAM PERFORMS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO BUILD GRASSROOTS SUPPORT THAT SHIFTS LOS ANGELES' RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE BY PROVIDING A MODEL FOR HEALTHY, CLIMATE RESILIENT CITIES. WE EXPAND LA'S TREE CANOPY THROUGH EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND RAISE AWARENESS OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AS A MULTIBENEFIT SOLUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND CLIMATE CHANGE. OUR WORK IS FOCUSED ON THE GREATER LOS ANGELES REGION, INCLUDING URBAN AREAS, PARK SPACE AND MOUNTAIN FORESTS. TREEPEOPLE ENGAGES VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT AND CARE FOR TREES, ADDRESSING LA'S NEED FOR HEAT-REDUCING SHADE, CLEANER AIR AND WATER, GREENHOUSE GAS CAPTURE, FRESH FRUIT ACCESS AND AN OVERALL HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT. OUR MOUNTAIN PROGRAM RESTORES FIRE SCARRED AREAS TO ADVANCE RESILIENCE, BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM HEALTH. IN 2019, TREEPEOPLE ENGAGED MORE THAN 6,500 VOLUNTEERS, PLANTED MORE THAN 5,000 TREES AND PLANTS IN MOUNTAIN FORESTS, PLANTED MORE THAN 3,500 TREES IN URBAN PARKWAYS, AND DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 500 FRUIT TREES TO RESIDENTS. IN ADDITION, TREEPEOPLE ENGAGED AND SUPPORTED VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE THE SURVIVAL OF MORE THAN 15,000 PLANTS AND TREES ACROSS THE REGION.
