TO ENSURE BURBANK PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION AS PART OF THE CORE CURRICULUM.
IN 2019, THE BURBANK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (BUSD) FACED A BUDGET DEFICIT FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. DESPITE DISTRICT LEADERSHIP REPEATEDLY CALLING FOR INCREASED FUNDING FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION FROM STATE LEGISLATION, DEVASTATING BUDGET CUTS WERE PROPOSED FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR, INCLUDING THE ELIMINATION OF THREE OF THE DISTRICT'S FIVE ELEMENTARY MUSIC TEACHERS. TO HELP MITIGATE THESE REDUCTIONS, THE FOUNDATION STRETCHED EVERY RESOURCE TO PRESENT A $100,000 GRANT TO SUPPORT BUSD'S ELEMENTARY MUSIC PROGRAM, WHICH IMPACTS ALL STUDENTS IN 2ND THROUGH 5TH GRADES. THIS GRANT WAS MATCHED BY A VARIETY OF PARTNERS FROM THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING BURBANK EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY BOOSTER ASSOCIATION, AND THE CHUCK LORRE FAMILY FOUNDATION, RESULTING IN ALL FIVE ELEMENTARY MUSIC TEACHERS BEING RETAINED FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED ITS HISTORY OF INVESTING IN BUSD SCHOOL SITE-BASED GRANTS FOR ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS IN THEIR SEPTEMBER 2019 GRANT CYCLE.
