Organizations Filed Purposes: The Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational corporation dedicated to promoting an enlighted citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy in the United States and other countries.

The James Madison Legacy Project is a multi-year nationwide initiative of the Center for Civic Education aims to (1) increase the number of highly effective teachers of high-need students through the professional development of 2,025 teachers, (2) increase the achievement of at least 202,500 students in attaining state standards in civics and government, (3) serve the self-identified professional development needs of a minimum of more than 500 participating schools with significant concentrations of high-need students throughout the United States, and (4) evaluate the relative effectiveness of the Centers research-validated traditional We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution professional development model enhanced with online resources and a new blended-learning variation of the traditional model that also uses online resources.

The Project Citizen Research Program, a research grant from the U.S. Department of Education, has given the Center for Civic Education and its partners the opportunity to offer free professional development for middle and high school teachers new to the Project Citizen curriculum.

We the People, the Citizen and the Constitution is a nationally acclaimed civic education program focusing on the history and principles of the U.SConstitution and Bill of Rights for upper elementary, middle, and high school students. The program is administered with the assistance of anational network of coordinators in every state and congressional district in the nation. The We the People Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle school students and youth groups that promote competent and responsible participation in local and state government. It helps young people learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy.
