The mission of Leap to Success is to educate and empower women who are overcoming domestic violence, homelessness, and other major life challenges to reach their greatest potential.
Leap to Success provides empowerment and leadership programs for women who are recovering from domestic violence, homelessness, addiction, and other challenges, throughout multiple locations in San Diego County. What started off as a year full of plans for classroom programs quickly changed due to the pandemic. Because of lock down measures and closures of non-essential services, we could no longer meet in however, we quickly adapted and revised our programs for a virtual format. By May 2020, we tested an online curriculum, made revisions, and were up and running full speed using Zoom. 769 people were served in 2020, an increase of 26.5% compared to 2019. All programs were offered at no cost to women who were referred by more than 50 agencies including Center for Community Solutions, Father Joes Villages, Goodwill Industries, Interfaith Community Services, Jewish Family Service, Mental Health Systems, and San Diego Housing Commission. Our programs, accomplishments, and activities included:1. Leap to Confidence, a seven-week classroom-based personal leadership program, transitioned to become a 6-week online experience. 178 women connected from their homes, transitional living apartments, and even the SD Convention Center (which became an emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness) to participate in this transformational program. The top three areas of growth that the participating women achieved were: 1) Higher self esteem, 2) Confidence in their abilities, 3) Empowered to make their own choices. Via survey, 59 staff members from community partner organizations gave feedbackon the impact Leap to Confidence Online had on their clients. 100% said the program helps women build confidence to move forward from adversity very well to extremely well 81% said they noticed higher self-esteem in their clients 88% said they noticed a greater sense of optimism in their clients 62% said their clients were more motivated to seek employment 2. The monthly Empowerment Circle program, available to all Leap to Confidence graduates, was held twice a week to provide additional support to women who were isolated and fearful. 98 women participated in the Empowerment Circle an average of 8 times each. With the rise of Covid-19 cases and additional stress and mental health challenges, this program became a lifeline for many women like Sutton. The Empowerment Circle literally saved my life. As I experienced the deepest depression of my lifetime, just showing up weekly helped to reinforce my value. I couldn't deny I was capable of at least one thing - keeping my commitment. The love, hope, experience, and inspiration we exchange each week are priceless. -Sutton3. Seven women graduated from the year-long Transformation Leadership program. Each woman demonstrated her public speaking and leadership skills through the intensive programs various assignments and activities.4. A highlight of the year was our new offering, Self Care in Stressful Times. We developed this weekly webinar for the helpersthe case managers, therapists and others who provide front line support to families in crisis. 260 people participated an average of 3.5 times. Most notably, participants rated their stress level at the beginning and end of each session which resulted in an average of 38% decrease in stress.
