Middle Tree is a nonprofit learning and tutoring center that provides access to supplemental educational services
Middle Tree was hit hard, as so many were in 2019, by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this provided an impetus for our small and innovative organization to pivot toward online support in supplemental education. This allowed us to maintain a certain amount of our services available and successfully lay in protocols to keep everyone safe when return was possible. The reduction in students gave us time to refine many of our materials as we worked hard to keep as many people on staff as possible, and we took steps to expand our dyslexia support services and make online tutoring, test prep, and college counseling as robust as possible.
Importantly, Middle Tree was able to survive due to its contract with Pomona Unified School District. While the organization was originally contracted to work with 3 schools, the success of the program caused PUSD to expand its request for services and support from Middle Tree and ultimately grew to 12 schools, which were all services on a remote, online basis. This important relationship paves the way for Middle Tree's continued inroads to support student-centered education. Middle Tree also entered in a smaller but important contract with the Ettie Lee Youth & Group Homes to support at-risk youth.
