Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE PURPOSE OF THIS FOUNDATION IS TO SUPPORT, ENCOURAGE, AND CREATE PROJECTS OR EVENTS THAT WILL IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. EVENTS OR PROJECTS THAT IMPROVE OR RESOLVE CURRENT PROBLEMS OF A SOCIAL, ECONOMIC OR EDUCATIONAL NATURE WITHIN LOS ANGELES, ORANGE, AND SAN DIEGO COUNTIES ARE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO THIS FOUNDATION. FOUNDED BY THE SPANOS FAMILY IN 1995 TO SUPPLEMENT THE EFFORTS OF THE TEAM'S COMMUNITY RELATIONS DEPARTMENT, THE CHARGERS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HAS LED THE WAY IN HONORING VOLUNTEERS, ASSISTING YOUTH SPORTS, AND HELPING CRITICAL CAUSES IMPORTANT TO THE REGION. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, THE FOUNDATION HAS PROVIDED MORE THAN $11 MILLION IN DIRECT COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE. SPECIFICALLY, THE FOUNDATION HAS AWARDED MORE THAN $6 MILLION IN GRANTS TO SCHOOLS FOR ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT AND PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAMMING; PROVIDED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN FUNDING TO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAMS THROUGH THE ANNUAL COACH OF THE WEEK PROGRAM; AND PROVIDED MILLIONS OF
THE PURPOSE OF THIS FOUNDATION IS TO SUPPORT PROJECTS OR EVENTS THAT WILL IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
PROGRAMS FUNDED BY THE NFL INCLUDE: COACH OF THE WEEK, BIKES FOR KIDS, PLAY 60, THE SUSAN G KOMEN SCREENING PROGRAM AND HEADS UP FOOTBALL. THE COACH OF THE WEEK PROGRAM RECOGNIZES HIGH SCHOOL COACHES WHO HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF THEIR PLAYERS, COMMUNITY AND SCHOOLS. BIKES FOR KIDS PROVIDES BIKES FOR CHILDREN WHO DO NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION. THE PLAY 60 PROGRAM ENCOURAGES KIDS TO BE ACTIVE FOR 60 MINUTES A DAY IN ORDER TO HELP REVERSE THE TREND OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY. FUNDS EARMARKED FOR THE SUSAN G. KOMEN FOUNDATION HELP PROVIDE FREE MAMMOGRAMS FOR WOMEN IN THE AREA. THE HEADS UP FOOTBALL PROGRAM FOCUSES ON PLAYER SAFETY FOR YOUTH AND HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PROGRAMS, BY TEACHING KIDS PROPER TECHNIQUES IN BLOCKING AND TACKLING DESIGNED TO AVOID INJURIES TO THE HEAD, PARTICULARLY CONCUSSIONS.
THE CHARGERS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HAS BEEN PROVIDING FUNDS TO EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES. THIS PASSION FOR SCHOOLS ALSO LED TO THE CREATION OF THE FOUNDATIONS SIGNATURE PROGRAM, CHARGERS CHAMPIONS, IN 2000. SINCE THAT TIME, CHARGERS CHAMPIONS HAS PROVIDED MORE THAN $6 MILLION TO ASSIST SCHOOLS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. EACH YEAR, THE CHARGERS CHAMPIONS SCHOOL GRANT PROGRAM ALLOWS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN SAN DIEGO - IMPERIAL COUNTIES TO APPLY FOR BADLY-NEEDED FUNDING FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, NUTRITION OR ATHLETIC PROGRAMS ON THEIR CAMPUSES. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL GRANT PROGRAM, MORE THAN 125 SCHOOLS HAVE RECEIVED FUNDING FOR VARIOUS PROJECTS SUCH AS OUTDOOR FITNESS TRAILS, WEIGHT ROOMS, RUNNING TRACKS OR EVEN HEART MONITORS AND JOGGING PROGRAM EQUIPMENT. THROUGH THE CHARGERS CHAMPIONS SCHOOL GRANT PROGRAM, THE CHARGERS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION IS COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF OUR REGION'S CHILDREN.
