The Ocean Institute's mission is "Using the Ocean as our Classroom, we inspire children to learn". Our organization is dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of the ocean environment and maritime history through high-touch real-world programs. In addition to our work in the labs, on the water, in in the local environment, the Ocean Institute brings the ocean to children through our Ocean in Motion visiting van program. From visiting classrooms of special needs students to working with students at Children's Hospital Orange County, we ensure access to enriching and inspiring programs. In addition to our work with schools and children, Ocean Institute welcomes families, private groups (from Scouts to Seniors), from the local and tourism community. The Ocean Institute utilized 1,635 volunteers in the advancement of their mission. These volunteers provided 27,478 hours which was valued at $822,060.
The Ocean Institute is dedicated to increasing the awareness and understanding of the ocean environment through unique hands-on marine science and maritime history programs. Using the ocean as its classroom, the Ocean Institute inspires children to learn.
Education in ocean science and the environment. Students are taught how we interact with the ocean and the life within it. Students utilize ocean science labs, tanks and pools to study the ocean, its creatures and the effect the environment has on the ocean. The Ocean Institute offers multi-day and overnight programs that blend the camp experience with labs creating a one-of-a-kind learning experience. In addition, Science programs blend learning labs and research vessels. Among the programs offered are Living Systems, Sea Floor Explorers, Life in the Abyss, Renewable Energy Explorations, Marine Mammal labs and Earth's Changing Climate Labs. 41,620 students utilized the facilities in 2019 in the study of the environmental and ocean sciences in conjunction with their school studies.
Education in maritime history. Students are taught how the ocean was used in history. Students use hands on exhibits including full scale replicas of historical sailing ships on which the students learn sailing and other sea faring activities. Among the programs offered are Before the Mast, Sailor's Life, Revolutionary Voyage, Helms Alee, Round the Horn, Patriots, Pirates and Privateers, and the Maritime Leadership Academy. 7,531 students experienced maritime history during 2019 in these unique programs and approximately 5,200 individuals experienced the Tall Ships Festival in 2019.
Collaboration is the cornerstone for in-depth, immersive learning. Collaborations provide unique opportunities for students to be engaged with scientific research and principles. Working with other NGOs, research institutions, and scientists, students can participate in programs such as our Girls in Ocean Science Teen Conference, Smithsonian Plate Watch Monitoring Program, Marine Science Immersion Project, and Pre-service Teacher Collaboration. In 2019, 3,180 students participated.
