Organizations Filed Purposes:
Save the Waves protects surf ecosystems around the world, forming coalitions with local communities and utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, stewardship, and grass-roots mobilization.
Campaigns and Outreach:Through our Endangered Waves and Stewardship Campaigns, Save The Waves 1)continued our ongoing support of partners in Ireland to defeat a series of seawall project proposals at Doughmore Beach in Clare County, and released a short film to garner international awareness; 2)launched a new campaign to protect a renowned surf break along the coastline of Southern Oaxaca, called Punta Conejo, from the proposed construction on an industrial port; and 3) launched a campaign using our mobile app to collect data on ocean trash around the globe, incentivizing the winner.Through our annual international surf and enviro film fest outreach effort, Save The Waves continued to garner awareness for ocean and surf ecosystem conservation efforts across the United States and globally.
World Surfing Reserves:In 2019, Save the Waves continued to expand and improve the World Surfing Reserves program, implementing the following: 1) Dedicated Guarda do Embau as the 9th World Surfing Reserve; 2) facilitated a planning workshop to enable the Brazil WSR to monitor their water quality and develop stewardship projects; 3) selected Punta Borinquen, Puerto Rico as the next World Surfing Reserve; 4)furthered plans for the dedication of the Noosa World Surfing Reserve in Australia; and 5) opened our application process to find and select the next WSR.
Surf Protected Areas NetworksIn our newly established program, Surf Protected Areas Networks (SPANs), Save the Waves is working to expand and grow our impact in protected area creation. In 2019, we 1)launched a pilot project in Morotai, Indonesia with our partners at Conservation International and A Liquid Future; 2)took the first steps to bring SPANs to Coalition partners in Mexico and Chile; and 3)launched the IUCN Alliance for Surf Protected Area Networks at the third Latin America Protected Area Congress.
