THE MISSION OF THE CALIFORNIA CENTER FOR COOPERATION DEVELOPMENT IS TO PROMOTE COOPERATIVES AS A VIBRANT BUSINESS MODEL TO ADDRESS THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION, AND BY PROVIDING INFORMATION AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE.
General Cooperative Education and OutreachCCCD provides education about the various ways the co-op business model can be used to create and save jobs, create housing opportunities, offer child care, help farmers or entrepreneurs join together to gain purchasing power or better compete in the marketplace, increase food security though cooperative owned groceries, and many other opportunities. Education and assistance are provided via our website, public outreach, and responding to inquiries. During 2019, www.cccd.coop looged almost 14,000 unique visitors who used the site's start-up tutorial, downloadable publications, co-op news, videos, and links to additional resources. During 2019, CCCD responded to more than 343 substantive telephone and email inquiries. CCCD also reaches out via Facebook and other Social Media Platforms.
Technical AssistanceCCCD provides technical assistance in a variety of ways, including development assistance, governance training for co-ops, and responding to requests. Development assistance includes performing feasibility & business planning, start-up, expansion and related support. We assisted with maintenance and growth of a worker co-op and four housing cooperatives that create and maintain opportunities among underserved groups. During 2019, CCCD completed two co-op homecare business plans, conducted food safety workshops, assisted worker co-op farms, and provided development assistance to many groups. CCCD assisted with the incorporation of two cooperatives, and the creation or savings of 28 jobs (this is limited to the immediate year's projects only).
Cooperative Conferences and EventsIn 2019, CCCD convened two annual 2-day conferences. On January 31 - February 1, CCCD's Agricultural Director and Executive Conference, was held in Sacramento and included 57 participants from 13 different organizations. Our California Co-op Conference convened in Sacramento on April 28-29 with more than 154 participants. In addition to Plenaries, Twenty Eight breakout workshops were offered, including a 1-day track of workshops in Spanish or with simultaneous translation. MCLE accredited workshops for lawyers and accountants were also provided. CCCD staff also presented and participated at conferences and events. During October "Co-op month" we organized "co-op day at the farmer's market," which brought together cooperatives from around the county to table and demonstrate the breadth of cooperative enterprise. we created educational materials on cooperative housing.
