Organizations Filed Purposes: Nature and Culture International conserves biologically diverse landscapes in Latin America, in concert with local cultures, for the well-being of the planet.

(Latin American Conservation Programs in Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru) NCI conserves lands and ecosystems in Latin America through the creation of natural reserves and programs to conserve rainforests and other threatened ecosystems. We do this in a bottom-up fashion by hiring local staff to work in the states and provinces of the region, who work with government and communities to create conservation programs and new protected areas, and building the local capacity to manage and sustain them. While emphasizing the conservation of forests and ecosystems, NCIs programs also promote community sustainable development.

(Environmental Policy, Education and Community Development) NCI develops and implements environmental policies that support land and resource conservation in a sustainable fashion. These programs address policy issues and economic incentives and disincentives, and work to implement ecosystem service payment programs. Examples include our work to create sustainable resource use, local green products, and the creation of water funds that create ecosystem service payments systems and channel them to effective watershed conservation programs. NCI also provides environmental education programs and works to develop the communities in Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru, including classroom materials, nature festivals, programs and teacher workshops.

(Science) NCI carries out scientific research that support our mission to conserve lands and ecosystem in concert with local peoples. We also operate the San Francisco Scientific Field Station in Ecuador, that serves international and Ecuadorian universities that conduct over basic and applied science research projects in tropical mountain ecology.
