Organizations Filed Purposes:
By strategically linking people, practice and policy, we make sure that children and youth in the most under-resourced communities receive quality expanded learning opportunities and that all their learning environments school, afterschool and summer support their academic, social, emotional and physical well-being.
PCY works to ensure that all children and youth in California have the learning supports and opportunities they need and deserve to reach their greatest potential in school and life.
HousED - We conducted training and provided coaching for over 250 resident services staff in public housing and affordable housing agencies, on best practices for quality afterschool and summer programs. We also launched two regional training cohorts for housing agencies, one in the South Bay and one in Oakland. Focus areas include literacy skill building for resident children, and overall quality improvement for afterschool and summer programs in housing.
Social Emotional Learning - We conducted a series of full-day workshops for California educators up and down the state on Social and Emotional Learning. Participants learned about new tools and practices to bring back to their districts and schools, and made connections with peers. All participants gained access to ongoing resources from Partnership for Children and Youth. We also supported planning for the California Department of Education's launch of their Social and Emotional Learning State Team 2.0.
Policy - We organized schools and community-based organizations across California to fight proposed cuts to the Afterschool Education and Safety (ASES) program, so that programs serving low-income youth could continue to operate for the half a million students who rely on them. We educated policy makers about the benefits of afterschool programs to English-Language Learners, students of color, and students living in extreme poverty. We also expanded our partners and allies in this work, by forging a new partnership with childcare and early learning advocates, who serve many of the same families with children needing care and learning support.
