GambiaRising provides opportunities to impoverished Gambians to better themselves through their own work - primarily through scholarships and financial assistance to Gambian students who otherwise might not be able to stay in or go to school. Our only criteria are character and need, and the amount of difference that our support will make in recipients' lives. We focus most of our work on keeping students in school, especially girls at the higher grades. We have also funded construction of several rural schools, and supported other Gambian schools through physical improvements, donation of learning materials and technology, and funding additional training for their teachers. We also supported several local infrastructure projects, including the improvement of rural health clinics and replacing or repairing village and school wells.
GambiaRising's primary program is to support the education of those who without help will not be able to attend school, with a special emphasis on girls. At the end of 2019, more than 2,00 students were in school with scholarship support consisting of whatever was needed to have them start, continue, or go back to school. This included school uniforms, books & supplies, tuition, study fees as needed and occasionally bicycles, car fare, lunch money, medicine, shoes, etc. as well. College students were also provided laptops. Of these, 64% were girls. This includes 130 students supported through two fiscally-sponsored programs, West Africa Medicine and Education (WAME) (97 students), and Kerr Alahagi Mallik Fund (33 students).
In rural areas where the primary cause of children not going to or continuing in school is the absence of a school close enough to walk to, we have supported the construction of schools in two ways. First, we have fully funding the construction of a new senior secondary school (grades 10 through 12) in Fula Bantang in the Central River Region. This campus now houses the St. Therese's Junior and Senior Secondary School and in 2019 it also hosted the first training of trainers in The Gambia for the Trees for the Future Forest Garden program. In 2019, the technical labs were also completed and outfitted with homemaking equipment, metalworking and carpentry equipment, and sewing machines.
In the Central River Region, we have also worked with communities to build small elementary schools where there is no school within 3 km of the village. In these programs, we supplied cement, corrugate for the roof, doors, and wood for framing. The community then build themselves a mud-brick school. We work with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to have the school be recognized by the Gambian government, who then sends teachers to the school. Once the schoolrooms are completed, we supply blackboards, desks and/or benches as needed. In 2019, with support from a grant from World Connect, we supported the building of the new Sare Wuring Lower Basic school. With support from Water Charity, we also supported the construction of a kitchen and school garden at Korrop, and repairs to damaged roofs to several schools in CRR. More than 900 children were attending these community-built schools at the end of 2019. 51% were girls.
