SOLANA CENTER, A COUNTY-WIDE RESOURCE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOCUSED ON COMPOSTING, WATERSHED MANAGEMENT, AND RECYCLING, REACHED MORE THAN 11,000 SAN DIEGANS THROUGH ADULT EDUCATION, SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES, COMPOSTING INSTALLATIONS, DEMONSTRATION SITE SELECTION AND IMPLEMENTATION, CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH. SOLANA CENTERS EDUCATION PROGRAM TRAINED MORE THAN 435 NEW COMPOSTERS AT WORKSHOPS, WEBINARS, AND FIVE-WEEK COURSES AND ANSWERED MORE THAN 850 COMPOST AND ZERO WASTE RELATED QUESTIONS OVER THE PHONE, BY EMAIL, AND AT THE OFFICE. SOLANA CENTER EXTENDED EDUCATION AND INFORMATION THROUGH A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER, ONGOING INFORMATIONAL EMAILS, WEBSITE, BLOG, SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS, AND MEDIA COVERAGE. WITH THE RESTRAINTS OF COVID, STAFF NIMBLY RETOOLED IN-PERSON EDUCATION TO OFFER VIRTUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING TO MORE THAN 500 PARTICIPANTS ON THE TOPICS OF COMPOSTING, CHICKEN-KEEPING AND FOOD WASTE PREVENTION.
SOLANA CENTER HAS MANY ROBUST WASTE DIVERSION PROGRAMS WORKING WITH SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, JURISDICTIONS, AND RESIDENTS OFFERING PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON RECYCLING, WASTE SORTING, AND FOOD WASTE REDUCTION. THE FOOD CYCLE COMMUNITY COMPOSTING PROGRAM SERVES OVER 140 PARTICIPANTS--HOUSEHOLDS, BUSINESSES, LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND EVENTS--AND ALLOWS PARTICIPANTS TO DIVERT FOOD SCRAPS FROM THE LANDFILL BY BRINGING THEM TO SOLANA CENTER FOR COMPOSTING. FOOD CYCLE DIVERTED 26,000 POUNDS OF INEDIBLE ORGANIC WASTE THIS YEAR, POTENTIALLY AVOIDING THE EMISSIONS OF 9.6 METRIC TONS OF C02 EQUIVALENT/YEAR AND CREATING 20,000 POUNDS OF NUTRIENT-RICH COMPOST. THE E-WASTE AND U-WASTE RECYCLING PROGRAM SAW 784 DROP-OFFS FROM LOCAL RESIDENTS OF THEIR ELECTRONIC WASTE, LIGHT BULBS, AND BATTERIES TO BE RECYCLED. SOLANA CENTER CONTINUES TO EDUCATE BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS ON RECYCLING AND FOOD WASTE PREVENTION VIA WEBINARS AND ZERO WASTE CAMPAIGNS.
SOLANA CENTER WATER PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION PROGRAMS, WHICH FOCUS ON KEEPING MOTOR OIL, ANIMAL MANURE, AND OTHER POLLUTANTS OUT OF OUR WATERSHEDS, REACHED THE COMMUNITY THROUGH SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS, WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS. ONE KEY PROGRAM SOLD MORE THAN 800 DISCOUNTED RAIN BARRELS TO COUNTY RESIDENTS. THE RAIN BARRELS COLLECTED MORE THAN 40,350 GALLONS OF RAINWATER, WHICH REDUCES BOTH STORM WATER RUNOFF AND THE NEED TO USE EXPENSIVE AND RESOURCE-INTENSIVE TREATED WATER FOR LANDSCAPE USES. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH A LOCAL WATER DISTRICT, SOLANA CENTER CONTRIBUTED TO A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT VIDEO. MONTHLY GREEN LIVING TOURS SHARED EFFECTIVE TIPS FOR REDUCING WATER AND ENERGY USE WITH MORE THAN 50 LOCAL RESIDENTS.
