OPERATION SCHOOL BELL - The Operation School Bell program provided new school clothing to children from low-income families in seven elementary schools. Forty-five students were homeless. The children were given three complete school uniforms at the Assistance League Glendale chapter house-a selection of long or short pants, skirts or jumpers for the girls, five polo shirts and five pair of underwear and socks. The children were especially excited to receive a warm, zip-up fleece jacket for cold mornings on the school playground and were eager to open their own personal hygiene kit packed with a new comb, hair brush, soap, tooth brush and toothpaste. They also received a $30 voucher from Big 5 Sporting Goods to take home to their parents to redeem for a new pair of shoes. The last stop before leaving the Assistance League brought big smiles to students as they chose one book to take home. Our program also included 48 middle school students in need. With the assistance of the Glendale Unified School District Healthy Start coordinator, students were identified and measured for sizes. They were given two pairs of jeans, polo shirts, fleece jacket, underwear, socks, health kit and a backpack. 551 students served.

AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS - In this program, unique to Assistance League Glendale, 2,591 children in four elementary schools welcomed a children's book author or illustrator into their classroom for a personal presentation. The presenters shared how they started writing or illustrating books and how their manuscripts were marked in red by editors. The children learned that they are not the only ones who have to rewrite their work to improve it. Often presenters started a story with the children, outlined a character, gave them a problem to solve and then left the story unfinished for the students to finish in class. This fits well with the common core standards in schools. In addition to the classroom presentations, school libraries were given copies of the author's books and a check for $1,500 to buy new books for the library. The four schools visited from May 1, 2019, to March 11, 2020, each received an additional $500, for their school libraries. 2,591 students served.

SCHOLARSHIPS - Assistance League Glendale awarded twelve $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors or continuing college students. The scholarships were based on community service, school leadership and grade-point average. The scholarship recipients were honored and publicized through our website and local newspapers. Because of the COVID-19 virus, the usual award luncheon in June was cancelled.
