Inspire the community to protect the Russian River forever.
RRK's Clean River Alliance program goal is to eliminate trash from the Russian River by organizing community groups and working with the homeless community to reduce trash in the Russian River and reduce trash going to the ocean. In 2019 over 2,500 volunteers and 5 staff removed over 350,000 pounds of trash from the Russian River.
RRKs Educate Program seeks to educate elected officials, regulatory agencies and the community about the problems of the river and what actions we can take to restore the rivers health. Our 2019 Educate Program accomplishments include: 1) Partnered with local schools to reduce invasive plants and collect seeds to prepare for native plant restoration at the Hanson Floodplain Restoration Project; 2) Worked with several vineyard owners to test soil organic matter to pair with water quality data to learn more about the role of soil health on water quality. Also shared water quality data with over two dozen vineyards as well as Water Board staff to inform Vineyard permit development; 3) Delivered presentations on what communities can do to protect water quality after wildfires to affected groups within the RR Watershed, Western US Waterkeeper programs and river conservation groups.
Served as local project lead for Hanson Floodplain Restoration Project to convert 360 acres with four large polluted open pit gravel mines back into productive floodplains to improve the river's health, restore lost ecosystem services and make our river more resilient to the changing climate.Conducted research and water quality monitoring of local dairies to greatly improve the Final North Coast Dairy permit and reduce pathogens, bacteria and nutrients that cause harmful algal blooms.Served as Russian River environmental rep on Potter Valley Project Ad-Hoc Settlement Group & collected water quality data to evaluate the source of high nutrient levels & pollution in the Upper Russian River.
