THERAPY FOR THE HANDICAPPED
From the organizations beginning in 1975, the program has always been a program run by volunteers. It has strived to be one of unselfish dedication in providing therapy in the form of horseback riding to those who have a disability. From removing manure to doing necessary tractor work (which helps remove snakes and weeds), teachers, former school clerks, retired military, physical therapists, high school and middle school students, give of their expertise, talents, and time. Each of them volunteering whatever capacity they are needed in order to move the program forward to the goal of helping the disabled population realize that a disability need not be a handicap. Young volunteers provide muscle needed to unload hay, feed horses, water, groom, and exercise the horses needed in the program lessons. Volunteers walk tirelessly beside the riders that need physical assistance, stabilizing the rider on the horse, and providing the necessary encouragement needed to make the experience a positive one for all involved. For the past few years, the organization has been able to provide horse therapy at no cost to the recipient. However, it will now seek monetary donations from the community to continue providing this service to the disabled. ARCH volunteers once again paired with The Assistance League, to help in collecting clothing, furniture, rain gear, blankets, and items needed for the community projects in the area. Many of the ARCH volunteers continue to help The Assistance League in some form throughout the year. The board members are researching ways to fund a housing development that will service disabled veterans, seniors, or other people with disabilities in our area. The organization has the land, but not enough funding to build yet. The organization hopes this project will become a reality, and is working hard to make it one.
