STEM Advantage, a 501(c)(3) public charity founded in 2012, mentors, prepares and inspires women and underserved communities to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). STEM Advantage provides economic and social mobility to underserved groups, while providing a vetted pipeline of diverse talent to businesses.Through partnerships and a collective impact model with businesses, professional and industry organizations, STEM Advantage is a holistic program designed specifically to level the playing field and help low-income, first generation college students attending a public university graduate and launch STEM careers, and then Pay It Forward as role models and mentors to help others. The organization provides support to STEM Advantage Scholars. These students are undergraduates majoring in a bachelors degree program at Cal State University Los Angeles, Cal State University Dominguez Hills, Cal State University Northridge, Cal State University Long Beach, Cal State University Fullerton, and Cal Poly Pomona. The majority are low-income, first-generation college students. This age group is focused on because fewer than 50% of students who enter college intending to major in a STEM field complete a STEM degree; the majority switch to non-STEM majors during their first two years of study. These students will help inform and shape the program for future students.
